Today, my a few of my wife's friends were throwing a baby shower for her and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity for my father and I to go out and do something fun. Knowing that he just got his .22 from when he was a kid (He's now 54, I'm 24.) refurbished and operational again, I invited him down to a friend's farm to shoot targets with me.

Although we had fun shooting the .22, the real fun began when I pulled out the clay thrower and the 20 guage.

Well, to make a long story short, my father and I really bonded again. It had been a long time since he and I had done anything fun together, and today's clay busting fun really brought out all those fun memories of the past again. He was hollering like a kid after each clay he broke. And really, for a first timer, he wasn't half bad. He was really doing well on doubles.

THIS is why I love shotgun sports.

Thanks for listening.

Good for you guys, STiTkacik. Make sure you do it again soon, and take him out for a beer and pizza afterwards. You pay! :p

Now, while I am personally thrilled that the two of you bonded, "the old man" remark is killing me.

I turn 51 in March and while I have certainly slowed down, it is my father that is an old man. I am married to a lovely 33 year old woman, and we just had our first child December 28, 2005. I do not have one foot in the grave....yet.

I am willing to bet your FATHER thinks the same way too. Go easy on that unless you know for certain he is cool with it, 'cause not all of us "old men" care for it. :neener:

At 51, I betcha he's done this before.

Glad you had a good time. I'm 56, my dad's 78. I don't think I will be able to get him to shoot clays with me. But who knows, stranger things have happened.

Well he said he hadn't - but he could have been pulling my leg. Dad's have a tendency to do that sometimes... :D

Congratulations on the baby and the father/son shoot!
I very well remember the last time I hunted with my dad. wish we had done alot more of it when we had the chance. I have many memories of hunting, shooting, and fishing, etc. He got sick at age 58 and died at 60.

I am 31 years old, my father is 52. When I was much younger, he would take me hunting with him, but he quit hunting alltogether before I reached the age of ten. This past December, I got him to go on a two day deer hunt with me and we both killed a doe. Even if we hadn't killed anything, it would have been a great experience. I'll never forget it and I hope to do it again.
On another note, when I married my wife she had never fired a gun of any kind. A buddy of mine had a party at his ranch and we blasted clays all day. My wife had great fun shooting my 870 12ga even though she had a bruise at the end of the day and asked me when she could get her own shotgun. Now, she wants a deer rifle.

Thanks, you made my day.

I'd swap my favorite gland for a chance to do that one more time with Pop....
