State police at Rockview say a Port Matilda man was treated for an accidental gunshot wound to the bicep Sunday morning.

According to state police, the 36-year-old man, who police did not identify, set a plastic container with his holstered and loaded revolver on top of the container in his truck at a location in Marion Township about 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

When the container was set on the truck seat, it accidentally caused the hammer to fall from the half cock position, state police said, and the .44-caliber Ruger fired, striking the victim. The man was transported to Mount Nittany Hospital for treatment. No further information was provided.

This sounds fishy.

Hmmm. Even though gun ownership in this area is very common, the local paper is pretty much clueless when it comes to getting facts straight WRT firearms... and most other things.

Why do you assume the paper got the details wrong as opposed to the guy making up a fishy story to account for the unintentional discharge? The guy probably claimed that the gun discharged after the hammer fell from half cock even though that isn't very likely to happen.

Double Naught Spy, Around here it could have been either way. We have a lot of stupid gun owners AND a podunk newspaper that has only a fleeting acquaintence with the facts. I guess I did make it sound like I was blaming the paper. It could have been either one.

Funny thing about that story. A buddy of mine (one of those stupid gun owners I mentioned above) lives in that town and when I started reading the article, I immediately figured it was him. I was actually surprised when I saw that it wasn't him.
