Accredited college/training courses for firearm skills/licenses?

I am eligible for the new GI Bill, which covers the equivalent for the most expensive IN-STATE tuition + $1,000 for books and supplies per year for a total of 36 months (3 years). It also will pay for $2,000 (have to double check that figure) total in certification/licenses.

I'm looking into any schools, colleges, universities, etc. that anyone is aware of that offer courses that may qualify.

Tactical handgun, NRA courses, tactical rifle, heck even hunters safety...

And I would definately put that $1,000 to use on new course 'supplies' like a new pistol, rifle, ammo, scope, etc.

Your input is definately appreciated, as always, valued THR members!

No one has taken or knows of any valuable tactical handgun, longgun, self-defense shooting, or similar course...

I've been to a couple schools and seen plenty more curriculums. I can't think of one single school that offers accredited courses involving guns. A private training academy is entirely different and I doubt the GI Bill would cover it.

Northern Virginia Community College, and quite possibly others, has a shooting course under their Administration of Justice program. From the description it seems pretty basic.

I have no idea how the GI bill would look at private places such as SIG Sauer Academy, but in general the instruction is probably better there. College credit doubtful, however.

I spent the last almost three years of my working life in Ed Services at Ft. Bragg, NC, approving payments for active duty soldiers who were receiving their education benefits as promised by Uncle Sam. I worked with several folks who were students at the gunsmithing program offered by Montgomery Community College at Troy, NC ( http://www.montgomery.cc.nc.us/acgunsmith.htm ). Don't know if you have considered this sort of thing as a possible alternative or not, but it might be worth looking into. There are other schools offering accredited degree programs in gunsmithing also.

Fair warning- I/we didn't do GI Bill stuff, just Tuition Assistance, GI Bill was handled by other people and I am very much unfamiliar with GI Bill regs and operations. But TA paid for the program at MCC with no issues/hassle at all, as it is a fully accredited program.

I'm moving this over to General, as it should get more attention there than at S&T...

Thanks so far for the input. I'm very excited to be able to use my education benefits for something both fun and educational like shooting and self techniques and skills, both to improve my Soldier and personal defensive skills. As an aside, with $150,000 worth of higher education, I wish Uncle Sam had given a 'buyout' option the "Post 9/11" GI Bill, but the new bill is a fantastic benefit.
