Actually, the advent of gunpowder into Europe helped bring an end to feudalism and change world history. Cannons allowed monarchs to subdue the fortifications of wayward nobles, thereby allowing for the development of strong monarchies and eventually large empires. Granted, gunpowder alone did not bring all this about, but it certainly played a role in this process. This is a fascinating topic in itself.
