Alleged would-be robber shot dead by intended victim in Houston

The fatal shooting of an aggravated robbery suspect in the 1200 block of Canterlane about 3:30 a.m. today will be referred to a Harris County grand jury, Houston police said.

The identity of the deceased suspect, who had been shot in the stomach, is pending notification of next of kin.

The robbery victim is identified as Derriun Raney, 26. He suffered a cut on his head.

Police said the suspect, dressed in black and wearing socks on his hands, knocked on the front door of Raney's residence. Raney, who had been asleep inside, opened the door with a pistol in his hand. He said he was repeatedly struck in the head with a tire iron by the suspect.

He then fired several shots at the suspect striking him in the abdomen, police said. The suspect fell to the ground and died on the front yard, police said.

Witnesses told police that the suspect intended to rob Raney.

WHY did the Idiot open the door to a [presumed] stranger at 3:30am?

Somebody comes knockin' at that hour, they're getting some harsh words through a CLOSED door. And if the person tries some 'I'm broke down can I use your phone', they're getting 'who can I call for you'.

Glad a thug is dead, but damn, mind the rugs.

And it's going to the grand jury, why exactly?

All deadly force cases go before the grand jury in Texas, because we figure it's better to have 12 impartial citizens decide if you were justified or not rather than leave that decision up to one government official (elected or otherwise).

Thanks for the clarification. :)

0330 wake up knock

It could be that he was half asleep and didn't think while he opened door, thank goodness he had the foresight to bring his gun.
I don't open the door anymore untill i know who it is, I got to stop looking thru the peephole

the artical didn't say

but i'm guessing it was refered to the g.j. without charges and that would lead me to believe what HKUSP45C said: "once it's no billed by the GJ a DA with a grudge can't put you in double jeapordy."

"no one needs a handgun"

Goes right along with "what are you going to do, answer the door with a gun in your hand," as internet comments that could only be uttered by people who fell off the turnip truck and somehow landed on a keyboard . . . :what:

Umm...maybe some dumb questions but...
1) Socks on his hands? Holding a tire iron? Doesn't that seem like an odd combination? A smooth metal blunt instrument with socks seems like it would get a little slippery...

2) Let's see...3:30 am...and there were enough witnesses around who KNEW that this guy "intended to rob" someone?

looks like a case of Darwinism in action. bad guy got what he deserved. even in liberal Texas counties like Harris, Travis, etc., i don't see the Grand Jury even really considering an indictment.

+1 for the good guys. :D
