Having hunted turkey since the early 70's, I've pretty much tried just about every option and combination that's ever been manufactured. And other than the now and then use of a 20 ga or .410 ga. SG, most all of my hunts have been with one of my fixed modified 870's. All have been successful in getting the job done, but a 12 ga. 870 has been the primary weapon of choice up until now. So I recently bought a Rem. Super mag, despite the fact that I knew I would never use 3-1/2" shells due to my severe neck problems. What can I say, I like shotguns and have always wanted my own Super Mag.. So this year I bought a box of 3" Win. Double X copper plated #4's, 1-3/4 oz., a Tite Wad Xtra Full Turkey choke to be used in my new Super mag..

Over the years I've taken shots out to 60+ yards with the now discontinued 3" Rem. Nitro Mag copper plated BB shells from a modified 870 barrel. Always worked great for myself, family members, friends, and clients. The results this years were absolutely amazing, to say the least. 3 of the birds my Son and I killed were taken at between 15 to 25 yards, which almost made swiss cheese of their heads at these close distances. But the last bird of the hunt I shot at 62 yds., which meant that at such long range, he was going to unavoidably take a body hit, regardless of where I placed the bead. He wasn't a particularly large turkey, but certainly not a small bird by any standard, just a good average bird. So when I let go with that shot, all I saw was my turkey getting knocked down hard, looked almost like he was hit with a brick. When I examined him, I discovered that his wing and leg on the impact side were both badly shattered. And when I did the gutting, I saw where a decent number of #4's had completely passed through his body, nothing unusual with the old copper plated BB's from the old days, but not something I expected at 62 yds. with #4's.

Dang, 62 yards is *really* something. I've never shot a turkey past 43 yards. Nice load/choke combo.

Interestingly enough, I get as good of patterns with IC and Federal flite control ammo as I do with an extra-full choke and standard style ammo.
