I just inherited a JC higgins Model 20, vented rib, polychoked, 12ga shotgun. The choke is a medium range and I am missing the other two chokes short and long range. (if anyone has any they want to sell drop me a line!!) It is in great condition. My grandfather got it new back in the 50's and never really used it!!! lucky me!

Anyway, I am wondering since this is an older gun what ammo to use for phesant hunting and deer hunting?

6 or 7 1/2 for pheasant and Foster type slugs for deer, unless you can use buck shot. Look at the barrel, it will tell you the chamber length, probably 2 3/4, and buy your ammo accordingly. Your gun should have no problem with modern ammo but avoid steel shot.
By the way, your choke is a modified. Find the original maker of your gun and keep your eye on Ebay, or maybe check Numrich.

The J.C Higgins marked with Sears part numbers 583.13 through 583.23 are High Standard model 10's.

By saying "poly choke", are you refering to an adjustable, or one with swapable choke tubes/sleeves?

I am talking about the one that is swapable. It is a JC higgins Model 20. I am just wondering what people whoi have this gun are using for ammo.
