Ammo question for a Remington R1 1911

Just brought home my first 1911 and it performed like a champ out of the box, it fed 150 rounds of 230 grain FMJ's without a single hiccup. In reading the owners manual it claimed the Remington was designed to fire the 230 grain bullet, and of course they recommended their Golden Saber ammo, but my favorite brand of self defense ammo (Hornaday Critical Defense) is a 180 grain JHP. Will this cause feeding issues?

Only way to know for sure is to buy a box or two and try it for yourself.

It might; Some 1911s don't like truncated cone bullets. But as 2wheels said, only one way to find out.

That said, the 230 gr. Golden Sabre is a very good round. I would use it or Ranger T 230 gr. if I used factory ammo for defense. I personally use 240 Gr. Sierra SJHC's loaded to .45 Super levels, though.

If you like Hornady, and are comfortable shooting +P loads in that gun, the TAP FPD 230gr ammo is really nice, that's what I carry in 1911's.

But yeah, only way to know for sure is try some.

I bought a box of the Remington Ultra Home Defense and it uses a scored hollow point, but the edges are very rough with protruding edges and it seems to hang when initially feeding. The Hornaday's are smooth as a baby's bottom and more resemble a FMJ.

Your 457 is based on the venrable 4513, with a few cost-cutting changes; It's really, REALLY hard to choke a S&W 3rd gen gun.
