Someone tell Mary Foster that the term is 'cartridge', not bullet.
The bullet is the projectile. She's writing about an ammunition shortage.

Or.... she's using a figure of speech:

Synecdoche, a figure of speech in which a term denoting a part of something is used to refer to the whole thing* [example: referring to your automobile as your "wheels"].

Nah, I can't even talk myself into believing that.

Seriously? Who here goes to the store to buy a box of "cartridges?" In my mind I think "I need to go and buy a box of bullets." Or in some cases I think, I need some 9mm or .357." Never do I think "I need to go buy some cartridges." It may be the correct term, but it would sound strange to use it over and over again like it was the common form of speech.

I go to buy "a box of ammunition" or "box of ammo." The box of ammo contains "cartridges" or "rounds". Each round consists of a case, a bullet, primer, and powder.

Every person of my acquaintance uses the term "cartridges" or "ammunition". The only time I go to the store for "bullets" is when I want BULLETS, as in a box of BULLETS for reloading, this would be projectiles only. Otherwise, it's a box of cartidges. Look on the box next time you buy a box of cartidges , it doesn't say "bullets" , it says "cartridges". Not trying to be a nomenclature nazi, but you asked.

I am reloader and many of us here are. When we buy bullets we are buying just that, projectiles. When I want to buy ammunition I do refer to them as cartridges. Words do have meanings and when we misuse them it is like blunting a sharp tool.

My pet peeve is "bullet heads" when referring to bullets for reloading.

Bullet heads??:scrutiny: I guess that would be a logical term for someone who refers to live ammo as "bullets", but it sure makes reloaders cringe.

I don't know, here in Vegas ammo is still next to impossible to get. Wally World only seems to have Federal 100 pack 223 in stock.

Well, I like the current condition. People are selling thier guns, cheap. I do not know if it is because of the "ammo shortage", the economy or the fact that millions have purchased just to purchase and now realize it is not for them but it is good just the same. I like econimocal guns, like SKS's and they are back down under $300 where they belong.

I think it's the ammo shortage pissing people off, since they can't afford to shoot their collection anymore...so like anything else, if you don't use it, sell it to someone who will.

LOL... I cant afford to shoot the guns I am buying but ammo will come later :)

The article said that lead is more expensive than gold.

Bargain Time!!!
I've got around 100 lbs of lead that I will let go at only $1.25M.:D:D
(Actually, a sharp wheeler dealer could probably talk me down to an even Mil.)

I'll also consider trades..

Until I read your lament, I didn't realize she was making that mistake. I read the article to mean that the one reloading component (the bullets) was what was in short supply.

+1!!!
When ebay stopped allowing the sale of ammo and the components to reload, it referred to ammo as bullets, and referred to bullets as "bullet tips". I believe these are their exact words...

...we will prohibit listings of any firearm part that is required for the firing of a gun. This includes items like bullet tips, brass casings and shells, barrels, slides, cylinders, magazines, firing pins, trigger assemblies, etc.

I'VE BEEN HIT BY A BULLET TIP!!! er... I MEAN BULLET HEAD!!!
