Organize with your fellow shooters. I am an NRA certified pistol instructor, got an FFL guy, and arrange group buys with my students. Aside from the order coming in, at the beginning of October, I just did an order with eight other students who gave me the money ahead of time(they trust me and have dealt with me before) to order 5,000 rounds of 9mm Brown Bear, 2,000 of .45 ACP Brown Bear, a case of 5.45x39, and two cases of 7.62x25(six of the students have Romanian Tokarevs). I ordered it up from AIMsurplus, they called me on the phone to make sure I was sure about my order lol.

After all said and done my share of 1,000 rds of 9mm will come out to just under $10 a box of 9mm, 750 roudns of .45 ACP at under $17 a box of 50. Buy in mass bulk, buy together, find some folks you can trust. Now admittedly I'm not going to keep all that ammo, I'll be sellign it off to my students at $11 a box of 50 for 9mm, $19(to cover sales tax) a box of 50 for .45 ACP. The other students had the faith in me to hand me a couple hundred bucks or so, so they get it at my cost. Fair is fair. And yes I have a tax number, I do pay a sales tax, and yes I can write off the expense.

Ammo Shortage @ Prices( Just where the heck is all the ammo?)

I'm sure someone on here has already talked about this but please forgive me havent been on in about 2 years. So of course I havent read to any post. So anyway what is the deal? Ive been trying to find 9mm, 500s@w, and 45acp any handgun ammo really but, I cant find any anywhere and if I do stumble across some its sky high and it seems everybody I ask has a diffrent reason for it. Like oh its the economy, its this and that but, my favorite by far and the one I trully belive is its because of Obama.
Then I stop and think even if it is Obama arent the ammo manufactures suppose to be running full time? At least thats what Ive heard. Anyway enough with the gripping does anybody have a good answer? Like when the end is coming. Any answer you can give as long as its not one of the above forementioned statements ive already heard will be greatly appreaciated.

I've been looking for .380acp forever and all I could find was .40S&W and .45acp so I traded a .380 for a .45acp. Now I'm still looking for .380 but buying and shooting my .45 and ammo is about $18.-20.00 a box.

They are, they are just having trouble keeping up with demand (and the fact that some production capacity has been devoted to military contracts over the last few years doesn't help).

Things are slowly starting to catch back up, though, at least online.

Just got back from walfart with 600rnds of WWB 9mm :) (limit of 6 boxes to each customer)

They still had at least 10 boxes of 9mm, 4 of .45 auto, and....... awe heck, I can't remember..... .44?

Anyways, either I have been timing it better, or things are loosening up a bit :D

a dollar a round is NOT about right, because it is a ripoff. however, when everyones buying it up anyway like its gold, hoarding it and the supply and demand is this way, you have no choice.

Also, cheaper than dirt has some of the most hilarious prices I've ever seen. Will NOT be buying from them in the future.

How much a box? I'm going to have to try there again. Academy Sports has been my source when I have the time nowadays. They usually have 9mm 124grn. "Nato" WWB at ~$15/50rnds and at one time had 9mm WWB 115grn at $23/100rnds.

It was something in the high $20, I think $20.97 for the 100rnd bulk box. The .45 auto was $31 for the bulk box, same price as the 38 special we bought a few weeks back.

Hope they keep a few on the shelf from now on, so I am not too worried about shooting if I get the itch :D

Acera: Thanks for the ammoengine link!

Today, the Monroe WA WAC gun show had plenty of ammo, cf & rimfire, and a few boxes of primers, so supply IS getting better. There were 10 or so boxes of 9mm Kurtz (a.k.a. .380ACP) from Fiochhi at one dealer table.

My local dealers are getting a lot of ammo. One has maybe 30+ boxes of .380. Another had over 50k small rifle primers as of 10/1/09 @ $39.95/1000. Things are starting to open up rather quickly, at least here.

What's the reason for the so called ammo shortage?

Here in California as well as across the whole USA:scrutiny:
Seems to be mostly handguns.

Grab an economics book and look up an increase in the demand curve coupled with an inelastic supply curve. You'll see the real shortage.

A democratic president and a whole ton of Democrat senators and representatives got elected, and most of them have an anti gun stance.

People responded by running out and buying all kinds of guns and ammo.

The gun sellers fanned the flame and fueled rumor after rumor to keep the mayhem going.

It's starting to end for the last couple months now, you see certain ammo prices falling already. It's only a matter of time and it will be back to normal.

If anything, cause of the mass ammo/gun buying, we might even see some of the best prices in years as the market becomes flooded with black rifles and ammo.

This is great news to know. I also understand there is a law in the books that will limit a person buying ammo to one box a month after a thumb print and background check.
And another one is that every casing every bullet will be identifiable by who it is registered to.

Well, CA was considering something like that, but the final version of the bill does not have microstamping or the 50 round limit. It does however make dealers take fingerprints, keep records, etc. It doesn't take effect til 2010? or 2011? And it's just CA not the other 49.

Of course like I said, the biggest cause of the shortage has not been any politician (this administration has actually been gun FRIENDLY so far, passing National parks CCW and almost creating a 50-state CCW) but the problem is simply greedy dealers and dumb chain e-mails spreading misinformation to make money and ruining it for the rest of us.

A lot of stores, or dumb employees, like to make up crap, or are simply unaware of laws anyway. For example some guy on here was at a store and they told him "you must be 21 to buy anything related to home defense or tactical" there's no such law in his state, just a misinformed employee trying to tell him their store policy is a state law.

I see no real shortage just greed.

Ditto.

There is an auction coming up this weekend at a private residence. Up for auction is about 20,000 rds in various calibers. Maybe he carried that kind of supply most of his life but I'm leaning toward hoarding.

P.S. I'm thinking of buying it all to bolster my little armory of 120,000 rounds. Yeah, right!
