One thing to bear in mind when you're using things like the price calculators, certain market segments have been hit harder than others. Brass, copper, etc. has jumped dramatically over other materials.
You might also reconsider your ammo source - I found several sites with lower prices without much effort.;)

Yeah I know that’s what I was alluding to in my post he quoted. With China sucking up commodities and inflation set to go through the roof I don’t believe ammo prices will moderate back down.

I guess I don't understand the angst. I didn't like what I saw on the horizon, and shortly after the elections, invested in a Dillon 650 (used, off Craigslist) and then bought the components needed for it to load the various calibers I shoot. I bought primers & powder locally at first, and when those showed signs of drying up, I started buying bulk via the net. I can buy primers at about $22/k plus freigh & hazmat. If I buy 5k at a time, that adds another $5.40/k, for about $27.40/k. Instead, I order 15k at a time, which drops me into the sub-$24/k bracket. I have about 40k on hand right now, which'll change when I make this run of 45 reloads I'm fixin' to do.

I see so many complaining about pricing, but I was able to find a half-dozen online vendors with good pricing in about 30 minutes of googling for the info. I've even found the "rare" 41 mag in Speer JHP for $27.95/20 box. To be sure, it's not as easily found - but my point is that it IS out there if folks are willing to spend the time to research it.

Remember - Google is your friend!:D

you do realize that "Good Pricing" is $70.00 for 50?

Yes, sir - I also realize I was doing an "apples to apples" pricing comparison - there was cheaper ammo to be had, but not of the same type he was looking for/at.

Issue there is that .41 Mag loaded down was at least a semi-popular police round in the early 80s. It has all but died.

Realistic comparisons would be .45 ACP, 9mm, .223 and .308.

I can do better than that even for Boxer primed brass. My point was that ammo is relatively cheap compared to 25-50 years ago.

Realistic comparisons would be .45 ACP, 9mm, .223 and .308.

But I didn't buy those in the 80's so I don't know the cost. Whether the .41 mag is popular or not isn't the issue the fact that the price has more than out stripped inflation is.

How about .380acp I bought my first box in 03 UMC for $8.99 just paid $23.00 for the same 2 months ago, or .44mag Remington express $1.00 a cartridge now.

You could say that the high volume sales calibers that compete with imports may come down but I'm not even sure of that because the Baltic Dry Index has been way down.

Guess I'm just dense, because those rounds can be found at decent prices with some shopping, as well:

above are just a coupla examples....more are easily found if someone will spend some time looking.
I don't know what your looking at but this isn't a good deal.

38 Spl 158Gr. Lead Round Nose Description
Winchester's Lead Round Nose bullet offers excellent accuracy and sure functioning.

IT'S OVER $25.00 A BOX PLUS SHIPPING and none in stock.

Yeah, the issue of popularity has alot to do with price. The .41 Mag has gone up so much in price because the volume of production has gone down so much. It is so much more expensive to produce in small volumes than it is to produce in large volumes. That's why .25-20 is much more expensive than .32-20 even though the raw materials are slightly cheaper.

I can get 9mm FMJ brass cased rounds for 8.97/50 at Wally World. I have a record of spending 8.99 for a box of 50 in 85. I can get .40 for 12.97/50. I can get .45 for 15.49/50. The .40 wasn't around in 85. The .45 is less than 5.00 more a box than it was 25 years ago.

2002-2005 brought ammo prices that were lower than ever seen before and probably won't be seen again.

PS. I can also get the aluminum cased (CCI) .44 mag 240gr JHP for 27.97/50. The brass cased (Winchester) is 35.99/50. 50.00/50 is high. Premium bullets can add to the price. That's a relatively new phenomenon.

.380 ACP has gone so high in price because demand is higher than it ever was. The newer pocket pistols have just caused demand to skyrocket.

Ammo manufacturers do not have dedicated machines for .380ACP. Ammo is run in batches. Dies are changed out, adjusted and calibers are switched.

Sure, some machines will be totally dedicated to running 9mm, .40 and .45. However, I do believe that .380 ACP is normally run in batches on some of the same machines as 9mm. When ammo manufacturers are having a hard time keeping up on 9mm, .380 ACP will suffer. It's still more expensive than 9mm to produce. High demand has led to wholesaler gouging.

.41 Magnum has an odd rim size and is really expensive to produce. It uses a different shell holder. Batches are run more infrequently. It costs more per unit to package and distribute because of the low volume.

The point is being lost in the complaining - bottom line is, that shopping what you're looking for will give you better results than much of the pricing being reported here. The examples I cited were "quick and dirty" search results. Since I reload, I don't worry much about what range ammo sells for....

Just go to Walmart to get your ammo. They have 45 ACP Blazer brass for 13.99 a box and Federal Champion 9mm for 8.99 a box. Yeah I know your Walmart probably doesn't have ammo because you expect to just walk in and buy like there is no shortage. Here is what you do (not for lazy people who expect everything to be handed to them) you go to your local Walmart you ask what day of the week their truck comes in , you go to Walmart on the day they stated at the time they said they would put out the ammo and buy said ammo. Yes it requires a little work on your part. But Walmart does get ammo you just have to be proactive if you want to buy it.

+1 Mags.
If you ask them, they can frequently tell you if/when more is coming in, and what calibers.

Also, is there something wrong with 333rd Winchester .22 packs? The Federal sells out immediately, but I saw the same 333rd boxes a few days after they came in.

The point is being lost in the complaining

Not complaining, I’m only buying two calibers for handguns and I reload for my shotguns, my stash has been replenished.

we'll just have to wait and see how this all plays out.

MNever seen anything like the current ammo shortage

I just returned from overseas after 6 years and I am completely bewildered by the ammo shortage? There doesn't seem to be any reason for the hording of ammo. The liberals are way to weak to pass any kind of gun legislation that would affect our ability to purchase ammo; as a matter of fact, from what I have seen, the pro gun lobby is kicking butt right now.

I can find no practice ammo, accept .22 LR, anywhere. I figured I can roll my own 45 ACP but had to go to 3 different stores to try and find components; I finally ordered everything accept powder and primers from Midway, but even they had no brass and I had to get brass from Dillon's. I was able to find powder at Bass Pro shop, but no large pistol primers.

Whoever is hording all the ammo stop!!!!!

havent you heard? they arent hoarding... they need every one of the 300 thousand primers of all sizes they conveniently purchased 6 months ago and are now trying to sell for 75 dollars a thousand.
nevermind the fact that they dont have a business license and are making things worse.

if you havent heard it yet... it is coming... just wait... you will hear the spill of how great capitalism is and how you are only whining because you arent prepared... nevermind the fact that some people simply werent OF AGE to buy the damn primers and others werent in the damn country to buy them.

There's a war or two going on. I'm surprised you haven't heard.

John

hu? and that has what to do with the hoarding of primers (even for those who dont reload) and ALL AMMO..

MNever seen anything like the current ammo shortage
I've never seen anything like this in 60 years of shooting.
Of course I've never seen the country in the hands of the likes of what's in control now.

I don't buy factory ammo but I have been waiting since April for a order of 20,000 primers.
This is getting serious, I'm down to my last 68,000 primers.:D

Acually, in Chicagoland the ammo situation is better than it was in availability from even 6 months ago.

Prices are another subject :fire::cuss::mad:

Short version. Increased demand due to
1) Increased military demand for US and other forces. (At one point US was buying ammo from Israel )
2) Decrease availability of surpluss ammo across the world for many reasons
3) Increased demand due to worries about economy.
4) Reports of shortages and/or price hikes of raw materials.
5) Obama's election caused a huge surge in firearms/magazine/ammo/components sales. Rightly or wrongly, given Obama's and the Democrats history/statements/party plank , MANY people expected additional guncontrol of whatever flavor from Washington and "voted" with their wallets.

This is a thread about ammo shortages in order not to get it closed NO THREAD DRIFT into politics,PLEASE
