I need to move my ammo out of a locking filing cabinet to another area. I was thinking about something like this Rigid Universal Storage Chest but don't have the money for something like that. Any ideas? Would like to see pics if you store your ammo in a similar fashion.

Thanks.

Do you need to keep it so secure? I just keep mine in 20 and 50 cal ammo cans but I don't have any rug rats any longer. That just seems like severe overkill. Maybe build a cabinet out of plywood and put the ammo cans in there, and keep it locked with a simple hasp and padlock.

I picked up two old truck boxes off craigslist about four years ago, bought some caster wheels and now I have mobile storage in my garage.

I store mine in (now) a pair of Stack-On 14 gun security cabinets.

they were on sale for $99.99 recently, and I'd be willing to bet they will be again in a couple weeks.
Some scrap wood I had laying around and I made some shelving for the inside.

and yes I painted it white.

How much ammo? How secure does it need to be?

There's padlock kits for .50 cal ammo cans. That could work for up to a couple thousand rounds.

Type locker, gun safe, and steel cabinet into Craigslist. You might find something.

I don't need to keep it secure. I keep it out of the house and miles away. It was sitting in filing cabinet that I made secure for other reasons.

It takes up 2 drawers in a 4 drawer filing cabinet. I don't need to keep it secure. I keep it out of the house and miles away. It was sitting in filing cabinet that I made secure for other reasons. Good idea. I'll check CL.

I have kitchen cabinets along the back wall of my garage. I keep my ammunition in plastic boxes that are themselves placed inside 50 caliber ammunition cans which are then set inside one of the base cabinets. I use a child-proof lock on the handles of the cabinet doors. This is just to keep toddlers out in case any come to visit.

I should mention that most of what I store are prepared cases (i.e. cleaned, inspected, sized, trimmed and primed) and not loaded ammunition. Apart from about 800 rounds of .223 that I keep on hand for emergencies, I only have 100 to 200 loaded rounds for the rest of the calibers that I shoot. If someone wants to break into my garage and make off with an ammo can full of 1,000 rounds of prepared 9mm or .223 brass, well, then since reloading is a hobby, I would just take it as an excuse to order more brass and unpack the decapping die.

If it doesn't need to be moved I would build a box. Make it whatever size you need. A chest type is what I would do, hinged lid on top and a simple hasp lock with plywood dividers.

I like the stack on safe/cabinet idea also.

You might see if you can find a salvage military foot locker. Put some casters on the bottom and it’s easy to roll around. It worked for me for many years while the kids were small.

It’s none of my business, but why do you keep it out of the house miles away?

Find an old refrigerator on Craigslist.
You could put a hasp and padlock on it if you need to lock stuff up.

Or get another locking filing cabinet at the Re-Store. About $20 locally and better (older) steel than the cheesey new ones.

Depending on your particular situation, I have most of mine on shelving (steel frame, not plastic) in a room in the basement. (I'll confess to having more than two filing cabinet drawers full.) It is visible for inspection or selection, easy to inventory, accessible and doesn't take up any otherwise needed space.

If you are storing this out on a range some distance from home, following the idea from post #3 is probably your best bet. Used truck/job box off craigslist. Probably no more than 20% of retail at best, going that route.
