I have a question on ammo. I've received a couple boxes of Remington 12ga, 2 3/4, MAG, #2 steel shot. Never seen such a thing before. Would this be too much for a 60's era model 1100 with a 1999 after market barrel?

Welcome to THR !

For safety I'd contact the bbl mfg to be sure.

"Most" modern bbls are ok with steel shot. I would use a more open choke as steel patterns tighter as a rule, and too tight constrictions, especially with larger shot sizes ,can /have been known to bulge a bbl...even steel shot approved bbls.

sm, thanks for the reply. The barrel is chambered for 3" and says not to use 3" unless you have a mag receiver. This barrel won't reliably cycle low base shells but does well with hi base. I am more concerned with ruining the action as I had not heard of 2 3/4 mag shells (I don't get out much).

The 2 3/4 Mag shells should be fine in your gun. The mag refers to a maximum load for industry standards. Just a hot waterfowl load, the maximum allowed by the industry to make. It probably says on the box under Dram equivalent MAX. The old system of measuring pressure. Hope this helps.

Typically, if the choke on the barrel is Imp Cyl or Modified, your OK. May be some concerns if it's Full choke. Calling the barrel maker is an excellent idea.

2 3/4 magnum rounds usually have more shot, less velocity. May be true for 3 inch shells as well.
