With winter being around the corner I'm looking to buy an air gun to shoot in our basement. I have a Crossman single shot gun and am looking to add a semi automatic. I'm willing to pay a little more for quality, as buying cheap anything has rarely worked out well for me. I'm not sure of the benefit of pellets versus BB's, and either one is fine. I'm open to any suggestions.

You didn't say whether rifle or pistol.

BB verses Pellets is easy. BBs are hard and tend to bounce so you have to very particular about the backstop. BB guns are almost always smooth bore where as pellet guns are rifled and tend to be more accurate. Pellets are available in a variety of shapes and weights so you chose the one that meets your needs balanced between velocity, accuracy and terminal balistics.

I’m looking for a pistol. It sounds like I should go with a pellet gun. Thanks.

I think you'll find a true semi-auto pellet gun limited to a few models, if any. There are some repeaters that simply require you to cock the action between shots, they have magazines so you can fire multiple times without reloading. CO2 and PCP.

Don't let me totally poo-poo BBs. If you want fun more than accuracy then there are a number of semi and full auto BB guns out there. I'd shoot them outdoors though because of the backstop issue.

Check AirgunDepot/Pyramid as they're one of the largest airgun dealers on-line.

I live in a Chicago suburb where shooting metal BB's or pellets outside isn't legal, understandably given how close houses are to each other, so we're limited to shooting in the basement. I wanted a true semi automatic to mirror the way we shoot real, for lack of a better term, guns. I'll take a look at those sites. Thanks.

Several companies make BB's that are lead, or will bust apart if hitting something hard. Don't rule out the lowly BB gun just yet.

I took a look at Airgun Depot and came across a Crossman airsoft gun that I ordered. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that for what we're using it for, shooting a maximum distance of 15 feet in a finished basement, that airsoft gun was a better solution. Thanks for the help.

I bought a Crosman Airsoft pistol a few years back that's okay for knocking around and maybe some FoF training. It's a magazine-fed, CO2-powered repeater. I'll see if I can find a picture and you can tell me if it's what you've got coming.

When the hankering for a rifled-bore, pellet shooter comes back, look up the Crosman PT85 and PT80 models. The former is pretty realistic for those wanting to duplicate a DA/SA gun with a reciprocating slide.

Here's the AirSoft one I have.

Attached is the link to the one I bought. It's a Crosman C11. For $35 with good reviews it's hard to go wrong. I did see the PT85 and PT80 and was considering one of them before I came across the one I bought.

I have about 15 pistols. The Makarov for the money is one really nice gun.(the non Blowback) I have had it for years and it still chrony's the same FPS. The Walther PPK's is another BB gun, low power that is good for training. My favorite is the Walther CP88 Pellet Pistol, A very popular gun used in Iron Plate Shooting in Europe. Double action, single action. Some fun guns are the replica 1911's with blow back. I would look up the website, "replica Air Guns" for a lot of review.
