Despite the cold drizzle and wind I managed to trudge through the snow and test some new loadings today. Was experimenting with OAL so test loads were:
.40 S&W
20 each loaded to 1.125" 1.130" 1.135"
Federal Brass with CCI #500 SPP
180gr TCFP Missouri Bullet IDP#5
Loaded one batch with 4.3gr Hodgdon HP-38 and one batch with 4.5gr

All rounds fed and cycled flawlessly through my XDm. No issues with barrel leading either. The mild HP-38 loadings are very soft shooting, 4.3gr had slightly less recoil than 4.5gr as expected but negligible difference. To be honest, standing in the snow during a cold drizzle at 15yds I did not notice much if any difference in accuracy no matter the powder charge or OAL. I was quite pleased with the results, easy recoil and good accuracy.
The cool thing about having an enormous pile of snow and ice as a backstop is the nearly unmolested recovered bullets:D Almost look like you could load 'em up and fire them again.

Kinda cool how they kept some of the lube in the groove even after firing...those sure are perty! Just for kicks, have you measured them to see how much they deformed from the ice impact?

I tried them with the same load in XDm (4.5" barrel), had minor leading but a LOT of smoke (~80 F outside). Some didn't cycle correctly. I went back to Unique, less leading and less smoke - same charge. Interesting that the bullets didn't deform much, front is shiny so I guess the were 're-cast' when they hit the snow. I'd at least re-lube before firing again.

Discovered during cleaning that I did have some streaks of lead in the barrel. Nothing too bad, a good scrubbing with a bronze bore brush wet with CLP got rid of it. Recovered slugs measure .402 at the rifling marks, same as the unfired ones.
