Another "self defense" shooting in Florida

People can question the 2A all they want... It's there, and it's staying.

Anytime someone gets caught committing a crime, they come up with a story to legitimize their actions. 2A is no exception.

I think the real issue is how many people in the comments are blaming this on "stand your ground" laws.

That's the dumbest part of the whole thing. "Stand Your Ground" didn't stop Zimmerman from getting put on trial, it didn't stop Dunn from getting put on trial and convicted of 3 counts of attempted murder (and he'll probably get re-tried on 1st degree murder), and I high doubt it'll stop this woman from being put on trial and convicted of 1st degree murder. I fail to see what "Stand Your Ground" has to do with any of these 3 cases. A defendant is free to claim any defense they want, that doesn't mean it's at all applicable. If Dunn had claimed insanity does that mean we should repeal those laws?

If you shoot someone in a fit of anger, what else are you going to do but claim self defense?

She doesn't even claim "Stand your ground" but the idiots, both public and news media will claim that the law is responsible. Why? Because they are idiots and are liars.

As far as preventing these types of incidents... Well, you can't lock up all stupid people, so the best way to mitigate the harm they do, is increased education of the law to both the News Media and the public.

But then you run into the Stupid People problem again...

Her criminal history includes several arrests for driving with a suspended license, drug possession and resisting arrest.

This criminal can claim self defense all she wants, but she shot someone she didn't even fully identify that she had to drive to get to because she was enraged over someone breaking into her house. Then she went home and packed and checked into a hotel???

There's no SYG nor self-defense here, just a lunatic who's going to jail for murder trying to cover herself.

What is of interest is the use of SYG and SD as arguments tossed into comments on these news stories where the relevance is only to point out that neither apply in cases like this.

Only fact here is there are a lot of stupid people out there, some have guns, some don't, it makes no difference what the laws say here. It's just a tragic act of an unstable woman. People will always jump to conclusions, and if they have a temper like she apparently does the result will usually be a tragic act that can't be undone.
The problem is where do we put them all, it's more expensive to house and take care of them every year with fewer people contributing their share. We need solutions for the growing number of mentally and criminally minded people in our country.

What can be done to prevent thses occurances or mitigate their impact?

I don't know that anything can be done to "prevent" things like this from happening. People will always claim they were justified in cases they were not, in an attempt to avoid arrest. Its almost human nature....

It is not a Stand Your Ground case, but that won't prevent the media from playing it up that way to demonize the law.

Zimmerman's head was being smashed into the ground, he had every right to defend himself with whatever it took to stop the threat. Jurors called it correctly.

The only thing he was GUILTY of was poor judgement for getting out of his car after calling 911.

Another case to watch on TV if the media wants to condemn Stand Your Ground Law.
