Another truck gun debate

Maybe carry the shotgun just during grouse season.

I am fortunate to have hunting property within sight of my house. If I want to hunt I grab the appropriate weapon and straddle my Honda, and I'm hunting in 5min.

....but here's another viable option:

Even with the inexpensive reflex sight, it is a good shooter.

I had one, once upon a time, long before all these fancy sights came out. It was VERY accurate. (As was the S&W 22S that I once had. Regret selling both of them.)

I would exclude a 22LR pistol for a number reasons.

1.) ammo shortage. I STILL can't buy ANY 22LR ammo ANYWHERE. I have about 2k rounds and once that's gone, my 22LR is a wall hanger.
2.) semi-auto/detachable magazine.
3.) I already have a pistol that is "almost" as good as a 22LR.

So...it seems like one of the guns I already own (357 Rossi 92, Marlin Model 60, or Colt 32 cal revolver) should be my "truck gun" in my UTV. Of everything we discussed, the only gun I think I would go out and buy is that Chiappa over/under combo gun, and that's about my best option if I want a shotgun. (Well...if Orcon had suggested a Browning 1917 BAR, then that would have been a close runner up.)

That sounds like a savage 24 or that chiappa folder.
I have a .22/.410 mod 24. They take down quickly with no tools. An ammo sleeve holds a variety of shotshells, even a slug. A couple of speed strips of .22lr tucked in the sleeve.

I have been wanting a good reason to buy a Taurus judge. I broke a few clays with my neighbor's.
...just a thought.

You broke clay pigeons that had been launched into the air with a Taurus Judge?

I make these for combination rifle/shotguns. They can be made in any savage combo. I keep a 22/410 and 22/20 in stock. They can be dyed in any color that you want. I no longer use the eyelets. I now glue an extra piece of leather inside where I punch the holes.View attachment 231607

Do you make any of those leather buttstocks for a Win94 .357 mag? I may be interested in one.

There is an M-4 5.56 DPMS with an illuminated variable scope that lives in my jeep. It sets between the drivers seat and the left door well. It is legal for Antelope and deer. The M-4 is an efficient 300 yard varmint rifle.

Why does it have to be a single truck gun? Sounds like you want a shot gun and a .22, so instead of a compromise O/U double barreled break action, why not a cheap 20 ga NEF single shot and whatever .22 you prefer?

Single gun because of space. I know the thread title is "truck gun" but it's actually going into a Polaris Ranger side by side. So pace is very limited. Essentially, I've got room for two long guns. (I could either go with a vertical rack on the floor, which means those guns will get wet crossing streams, or I can go with a horizontal rack in the roof, which would keep both guns dry in all but the worst scenarios.)

So with the discussion here, and the Chiappa nightmare in the other discussion, I'm narrowing the field to: one of the guns I already own, some version of a Savage combo gun (probably a 42 at this point), or, like you said, some version of a single barrel 20 ga. (Or carry my vintage Winchester 20 ga.).

It maybe many of us ride in a beloved vehicle we could barely afford. Being avid shooters, hunters or back country rangers. We compliment that ride with a nice firearm.

If it's a 20ga mod 12 you would be my hero.
Not quite. 20 ga side by side Model 24 (the "much" less fancier version of the 21) made in 1947. I do, however, have a Mode 12 in 3" Magnum "Heavy Duck" (the first of the 3" chambered shotguns) made in 1935. But you'll be pleased to know that there was a 20 ga Model 12 for sale locally here very recently. (Asking price was $300-it was a good deal for someone.)

By the way folks, a Savage Model 24C (camper version) in 22Lr/20ga came up for sale locally yesterday for $400. It was gone in minutes. =(
