Hello.

I am wanting to get into martial arts for offensive and defensive fighting. However, I simply do not have enough time to take classes for martial arts.

Are there any good websites that explain and preferably show some basic SD moves, especially for disarming an attacker?

Thanks!

hello im wanting to learn to ride a bike but dont have the time actually go out and ride one does any one know of a good website that explains and preferably shows some basic moves, especialy how to jump through a flaming hoop :uhoh:

after i sent and read my last post i thought i better write again and say that i wasnt trying to be a sarcastic jerk, i was trying to make joke but i think it came across kind of the wrong way. i would however have to stongly advise against learning to disarm an attacker through the internet.

Junke's right (and his second post was better than the first, even though the first made me giggle -- thanks for softening that a little, Junke).

You might try looking over at Marc MacYoung's site, www.nononsenseselfdefense.com While he doesn't give you specific moves, he does talk about the most important part of physical self-defense: mindset. He talks about the reasons why criminals do the things they do, how they do those things, and how to avoid having those things done to you. He talks about the art of not being there.

About martial arts, he discusses the difference between "sports" martial arts, and martial arts suitable for self defense.

Worth a look, if you want to know some of the basic philosophy behind self defense.

However, if you want to learn how to do the physical moves necessary to defend yourself -- how to kick, block, punch, pinch, strike, throw, fall, etc in the most effective and least painful manner possible -- you need to get yourself to a dojo, dojang, gymnasium, boxing ring, or wrestling mat. And you need to do it regularly so the skills stay sharp.

Shooting skills are perishable, but regular practice is a good preservative. -- me.

Self-Defense Forums Has a lot of good information. Also has many threads with lots of pictures clearly demonstrating various techniques.

You would be well advised to read a lot before any posting. Especially the stickies. They are not easy on newbies there. And be sure to post an introduction in the proper forum first if you do decide to participate.

H.c.s.

I do not know of any websites, but I can suggest a video tape guide for you to watch. You might even be able to find references to it on the I-net and be able to order it.

The tapes are called "Hostile Control System" and is a series of defensive techniques put together by a guy named "Jerry Peterson" (I'm not sure I've got the name right) He's is the guy responsible for the creation of S.C.A.R.S. the hand to hand combat that is taught to Navy Seals. It is very basic, but he goes through it in great detail and discusses training with his system.

The nice thing about this is that you find yourself a buddy and you can practice it whenever you want. The key with this is practice. Remember, this is only a basic guide.

This does not make you bullet proof or even mildly invincable. It might, if you take it seriously, give you a bit of an edge in a situation.
