Back before the Great Abomination, aka GCA 68, an importer brought in a bunch of Finn Carbines in 7.62x39. Ammo was scarce, the actions were good short actions and most of them were converted to other calibers.

Who occassionally thinks about the bad old days.
Something is bouncing around in my brainpan about the CHICOMS converting some bolt actions into 7.62x39. I think it was surplus Arisakas from the Japanese surrender. IIRC many were then sold to the NVA and some then found their way back here as captures.
I would pass on 7.62 Russian and go straight to the Thumper Round .308, which would maximize a bolt-actions benefits and the cartrige(unlike 7.62 Russian but do what you will enjoy or have a need for )
Yes I recall that 7.62x39 was rare. Exoensive Lapua was all that was available until the Chicom stuff poured in along with guns to shoot it in.
I read that as a collector cartridge, 9x18 Mak once sold for $10 a round! Makes sense though during the cold war years. How would have one got that ammo except for a handful of Vietnam bringback stuff or some other exotic way?
