Anyone ever go to Hoover Dam?

I flew to Las Vegas in December of 2020 for a Grand Canyon hike and took a gun with me. On the drive back I decided to visit Hoover Dam. There's a permanent checkpoint at the top of the hill on the old road where you will be stopped and asked if you have any weapons or explosives. I answered honestly that I had a firearm and was told I would not be allowed to proceed. They pulled me out of the line and turned me around. I had seen the dam several times before so it wasn't a big deal, but if I hadn't I might have lied to him.

I had a similar thing happen in 2007 when I visited the Trinity test site on the White Sands Missile Range. The Trinity site is only opens on two Saturdays a year, one in April and one in October. I made a trip from KY to NM on that weekend specifically so I could visit, and I had the same interactions with a soldier except he asked about guns or alcohol. When I answered yes to the gun question (I was driving my personal vehicle) I was told I couldn't enter. I asked the guy what I was supposed to do after having driven all that way. He shrugged his shoulders and said most people just hide them in the desert somewhere--so that's what I did. I found a single track road in the sand and drove until I found a distinctive tree and hid my rifle and pistol behind it. Upon my return the same guy greeted me and asked me the same question. I answered no and was allowed to proceed. I don't know if he remembered me from earlier or not. Happily I found the distinctive tree again and my guns were still there when I went back to get them.

I did once in the late 1960s during the heading home leg of a cross country trip on US 93 at the time. This was before the Interstate Highway system was finished.
