I'm considering buying a 37mm flare/smoke launcher. Here's the place I'll probably get it. The launcher is on the left side, under the Cobray's:

(One cool thing is that it'll be shipped to my front door. It's not classified as a firearm.)

Does anyone have any experience with these? I've lurked around 37mm.com and gotten some good information, but the forum seems to have low participation at times. I haven't found much more info on the web about this product. Why the lack of interest?

I plan on reloading my own rounds. I'll start off with flares and smoke rounds, and if I enjoy that, I'll probably register it as a "destructive device" so I can experiment with more exotic rounds.

I expect this to become an enjoyable (and safe) hobby for years to come. Has anyone here tried it?

I *think* (don't hold me to it) that each explosive round legally has to be registared as a DD...

Yes - explosive rounds. Flares and smoke are not. The lift charge is a "propellent".

Now, "Bird bombs" are a different story...

Aren't those dangerous? I was thinking of getting one to dress up an AR15 but then I heard the owner of Tapco was killed in a 37mm launcher accident.

Reloading your own rounds for 37mm is where it gets dangerous. Factory loads, and nothing remotely "homebrew" isn't dangerous.

I have a gas M11 airsoft it is cheap fun. I can spray a mag in 3 secs and only cost me $.10. :D

I have been thinking about getting a 37mm just for looks. The club I am part of might not like me launching flares down range. ;)

a friend of mine that I shoot with has one. it is neat for the wow look at my evil gun attention. he gets asked alot if it is a real gernade launcher when it is out. It does add alot of weight to the front of the rifle. it isnt as easy to fire the rifle accurately with it on. make sure to get the M203 foregrip and sight for the looks real look. he has a 12 gauge adaptor in his so he can run cheaper and easier to get flairs in his too.

edit to add: his is on a AR15 not sure I have ever seen one that fits a m11 or even how it fits on a M11

myopicmouse...

Are you trying to get this thread shut down? C'mon, I'm trying to get some LEGAL information here...

I certainly hope you're joking, but with only 12 posts under your belt, it's hard to tell.

Yes, I had one. I actually still own it, but I loaned it to one of my friends and never got it back, and I didn't ask him for it back.
It is kind of cool the first couple times. You may end up really enjoying it

I have also fired the real thing.

I can't say I've ever heard anything good about them. I've seen a couple full auto ones fired and those jammed fairly often - and those aren't clones AFAIK. I haven't tested hundreds of them or anything, but I wouldn't spend my money on one. I would just get a Makarov and have something that works. :)

Seeing as we can't legally own grenade launchers here in Australia, can someone explain to me why these launchers are 37mm as opposed to the military-standard 40mm?

Is it just so you cannot use 40mm ammunition in them or is there some other valid reason for using grenades 3mm narrower?

I would imagine they chose that diameter so you can't shoot actual greades in them.
They are not strong enough to fire one anyway.
They are nothing but a novelty. It makes your AR15 look like it has an M203 on it. I bought mine for like $20 because a guy had one lying around in his gun shop that he bought just to play with it. I did mount it on my M4 clone, but never actually fired it. As I mentioned, I loaned it to a friend who has fired it and I fired it on his gun.

Info

As far as why they have a 37mm and a 40mm there is virtually no difference besides the size and the 40 can handle a bigger lift charge they can both shoot the same ammo they can both shoot grenades but not legally In the US atleast the laws do differ state to state but there are many options for legal rounds without registering it at all If you register it as a destructive device which is like $200 a year then you can own a wider veriety of rounds both 37mm and 40 mm launchers are available in the US except maybe california but make sure you always check your local laws with the police department. I load my own rounds it gives you more options of different rounds but can also be very dangerous but there are rounds that are easy to make that there is virtually no danger in buiding even if the round gets stuck in the chamber the launcher and you will be just fine but there is danger in alot of the rounds and many laws you have to work around. If you are going to reload rounds do lots of research before attempting it:D

No, it's a one time $200 tax on the transfer (or making if you make it yourself). Not $200 every year. Just once. With grenades, each grenade has to be registered as a DD. Again, a $200 tax on each, but only once...

I heard the owner of Tapco was killed in a 37mm launcher accident.

I never heard this, when did it happen? I always thought the company was a woman-owned small business. Usually women are smart enough not to monkey-around with explosive devices.
