Any input on these thermal sights, I would like to get into an entry level thermal scope to hunt varmints, coyote, fox, raccoon, etc.

Kinda have heard good things about FLIR systems, but nothing first hand about this scope, just the reviews which are mostly good.

They do have reports of them going through batteries rather quickly.

No familiarity with flir weapon systems, but flir cameras can do a lot more than people would imagine. In college we did a project to count a captive herd of elk. Helicopter flew over the 500 acres at night and we were able to count elk, deer, hog, and could see small critters too. This same camera/helicopter setup was supposedly used to locate marijuana grows as it puts off a different heat signature than the corn it was planted in.

Well, I have 10% off until Sunday, I might have to pull the trigger. A lot to spend on an optic, doesn't seem so hard to do on a gun, but an accessory just seems not right. Guess I will have to work a bit more overtime.

You can almost always get 10% off on Opticsplanet. Just google 'Opticsplanet coupon'

Yes that is what I am using 3DAYSALE is the coupon, I have been shopping them around other sites, and OP is about as good of prices as I can find.

They'll have another sale. Don't worry. I almost always can find a 10% off on OP. I'm not saying to skip the scope, looks like a good scope, just don't feel pressured.

Been looking at these for about 4 months now, have had a couple 10% off sales go by when I didn't have all the money. Haven't seen any higher percentage off on any of the optics. So, I just made the plunge, got the free shipping, should be shipped in about 4-5 days. I will try to get it out and get some type of report on it as soon as I can. Really have nothing to compare it to.

i'm curious. i have a pas23 and a COTI, and friends with everything from the pas13g to the $200k+ stuff (phenomenal)
i do NOT like the earlier flir thermal at all, but it's been several years so I'm hoping they've improved it a good bit.

When you're shopping for thermal there are a few things to pay attention to
cooled vs uncooled (obviously, cooled is way better and big bucks)
the resolution of both the LCD display AND the sensor
the refresh rate (if you're hunting and swing the gun around or a hog runs through your FOV, that delay will get annoying fast
the size of the objective (19mm is very small but still usable)

Ok, FLIR finally came in last week, weather has been too hot and buggy to do much outside with it but I did go out at twilight one evening to see what things looked like. I have not figured out all the computer controls yet to set it up to my AR for sighting and video and pictures. But I read the instruction manual, which is 22 pages and pretty easy to understand until you get to the point where you want to adjust settings for extreme environments. Think I will just leave it in default at this point.

Came in a large fitted case about 10"x12" about 6" deep.

The round spin off cap with the cable on it is the battery compartment, spin open and drop twin battery cassette in, spin close. FLIR 233 005.JPG

Anyway, with nothing to compare it to, I liked how I could see birds flying around in the sky at the end of the day, bright white spots zooming around out to about 80 yards, there may have been some further out, but depth of view is a bit different in infrared. I could see my chickens walking around in the pen quite clearly at 100 yards, their heads stood out mostly as there are few feathers there and most of the heat was coming from that, but could still see there bodies for clear ID. Temp out was bout 78* when I was doing this, and I was using it like a handheld not on a weapon. Could see across one of our fields about 300 yards to a corner post that was steel, it stood out brightly as the sun had been on it all day. Cars at 500+ yards going down the road were easy to see outlines as well as houses at that distance with well defined outlines. There wasn't any other animals out like deer or racoon yet so I don't know what ranges I can expect to be able to ID other animals.

I am sure cooler weather will let warm animals really stand out. Hope to thin out our resident coyotes this fall. I will try to do an update when I get the gun sighted in with this scope.

Finally had time to get this out and sighted in. Initially the first couple shots were over 16" to the right, barely cut target to see where I was shooting. Elevation was a couple inches high at 100 yards. Made the adjustment in the computer inside the scope. Good guess was only about 1" to the right with the next shot. Final adjustment had a nice 4 shot group out of my AR of about 1 1/4". Considering I am aiming at a thermal blob of heat on the target I was happy with it. I know my ammo would group under 3/4" out of this gun.

Still haven't had a chance to get this out at night. Won't do much good until crops get harvested, then I can really see what it can do.

If you get it out at night please post some screen captures if you can.
