Have always been more of a Ruger guy, but lately haven't been happy with them and I see that the multi-caliber revolver Taurus had at Shot last year is finally out and under $500. My next .357 purchase will be a 6 inch barrel and it just so happens the 692 is available with 6 inch barrel, so I want feedback and I want it now!

For those who say it won't hold up to steady loads of .357, my intention is to mostly shoot 9 and .38 in it, .357 when I feel I need the power.

I'm going to get one... If I beat you to it I'll let you know how it goes.

Are you getting black or stainless?
Stainless. Cheap guns generally don't have good bluing and it doesn't hold up over time. Also, Taurus seems to sell the blued and stainless for the same price too, so you don't pay extra for either or.

You’re not back from the LGS yet? Well hurry up and get it home! I saw your post and now I’m interested. We want a THOROUGH after action report listing pros and cons. And accuracy reports from at least 25 yds.

You have an eager audience!
Hey, whoa, I didn't say I was buying it right away. This is a "I'll buy it in a few months" kind of thing.

Very nice in the 3” set up I’d be tempted

I was looking at that too. I like the look and probably the balance of it better, but with the compensator, it shoots more like more like a 2" barrel snubby. And I already have .357 and 9mm snubbies that are smaller and lighter (and easier to clean.)

OK, I guess I'll tell you how mine works out. I am thinking 2 weeks before I get one.

So there aren't any short comings in shooting 9mm through a 38/357 barrel? I wonder why Ruger and Smith doesn't currently offer something like this? To sell extra guns?

38/357=.357 diameter 9mm=.355
There has been plenty single action revolvers with conversion cylinders. I’m not sure why no other maker has had a double action as such.

There ARE other makers of double action revolvers with caliber conversion cylinders. True, they are Expensive European not commonly seen on the general store shelf. Manurhin, Korth, and Jantz that I can think of offhand. Also the extinct FN/Astra Barracuda. I once found a large moon clip that would likely have come from one of those.
Smith & Wesson knows how but has done it only in .22 calibers.

I recently got a Taurus 692 #2692039 SS Ported 3" DA Revolver 7-Shot Convertible .357 Mag / 9mm Luger but have not had a chance to shoot it yet (my wife has had serious health issues and last time I went shooting was New Year's Day) but it looks and feels good in hand. The cylinder / crane assembly swap out seems to be a real nice setup.

Finding one available for "under $500" would take some work, at least locally. I was able to get one (1) but they are all currently on back order. The lowest dealer cost I have found was $488.65 plus shipping (unless the order is big enough to qualify for 'free shipping') so the local street price would run $538 - $562 plus tax..

I just did a quick search on GUN.DEALS and found several of the Taurus 692 3" #2692039 for about $500 plus shipping and transfer (plus Sales Tax depending on state of residence) so they are out there. Usually the six inch models cost the same as the three inch ones.

What gun is shown here?
The barrel is not ported and looks more like 4" than 3".

Found it, that is the .22 LR -.22 WRM version.

Yikes! How embarrassing. :(

I was up past my bedtime and when I found a photo with both cylinders in my THR 'Attachments' I posted the Taurus 992 22/22WMR version by mistake.

Here is the actual Taurus 692SS 3" revolver with adjustable sights and ported barrel.. Does not show the second cylinder assembly, but the 'button' you push to change them out is clearly visible just above the front of the trigger guard.

Thank you for the correction, Jim.
As I get older and more easily distracted, I have come to really appreciate having someone help me from wandering too far off the path.

Well, it was getting my hopes up for a straight 4 inch barrel version. The short barrel and superfluous holes are negatives to me.

I feel the same way. Kinda....because I bought one They's probably release the 4" non-compensated one soon.

It shoots well. As usual, DA is pretty good, SA is overly heavy compared to a Smith. Lockup is tight, cylinder alignment looked good, but I got some shaving with Precision One plated .357. I don't remember if I got it on my other .357's. XTPs were OK. I don't really like that P1 uses plated for their .357s, but they are cheap and they use starline brass. Besides, they are local. So I buy them anyway.

So I shot 70 each of 9mm FMJ and .38 SWC plated at 15 yards. It shot well with both cylinders, but against my expectations the 9mm did a little better. I wasn't trying to set any records, just going out and plinking.

I find it interesting how much the POI changed by changing calibers. Oh yeah, and now I have to clean 2 cylinders instead of one. Not sure I like that.

Are the cylinders 6 shots or 7 shots?
