I am trying to determine what safe I want to go with based on all of the usual variables. I am seriously looking at some Ft. Knox safes. It is what we have at work and after my research they seem to be pretty well made. However, I have not been able to find pricing on these things anywhere. I know why but I am not going to get into that. So, I am curious as to whether or not any of you might have one of their models. If so, could you message me or post what model it is, how you like it, and the average price I can expect to pay for one?
On a side note, I want to put this in a closet in my finished area in the basement. However, there are a few problems. One, it gets humid as hell down there in the summer time so I imagine a dehumidifier is in order for sure. Not a big deal as I was going to put one in the safe anyways, but I am not sure if I should let it run all of the time. Should I? My plan is to get some silicone socks for everything and place them within the safe with the dehumdifier. Do you think this will be ample enough to protect them? I have some things that could never be replaced. Secondly, the closet I was going to put this in is large but also has shelving and other stuff in it that could not be removed so it is going to be hard to hide it. On the other side of the wall of this closet is my hot water heater, which is not gas so no concern there but I am wondering if I should be worried about this at all. Would this be of any kind of a concern? The other option is to move it into the entertainment room and build a series of book shelves to cover the safe, one with an internal hinged hidden door to allow access to the safe when needed. However, that is a lot more work.
The last option and IMO, the most ideal if it was possible would be to move it into the main living area. This would require a lot of finesse though and take climbing up two flights of stairs. Another concern other than just moving it up the stairs here is the problem of whether or not the stairs will hold a ridiculously heavy safe with 4 guys moving it. I sure would not want the stairs to give way with something like this on it. They seem pretty sturdy and I have had 7+ people stand on them at a time before but you never know. All in all I would say they have had well over 1000 pounds on them before but I am still a little worried. Another advantage to having it in the basement is the obvious bolting to the concrete slab vs. studs. So, what do you guys think? I would love to hear about some ideas here and if any of you have info on the Ft. Knox safes please share. Thanks.
