Anyone powder coating?

Back in June 2014 Ryan Ketcheson (RMR Bullets) was kind enough to create a special 500ct packet of un-lubed 230gr .45cal lead bullets for me.

I used them to test the PC performance against some lubed RMR bullets of the same type that I already had on-hand.

To remove the lube from pre-lubed bullets I would first bake/burn-off as much as I could (most of it) in the toaster oven (I have long resisted the urge to cast my own bullets ... for me its labor-intensity would far exceed my interest in the process, I am sure). I would then submerge them (agitating them periodically) in a Mineral Spirits bath for a day and repeat that operation with a second clean(er) MS bath for another day prior to removing and drying them.

Retrieving fired bullets from my sand/clay backstop I found (as I suspected) that while the PC did an acceptable job of adhering to the cleaned bullets, the coating on the never-been-lubed bullets was noticeably better.

re: Hi-Tek coating

Before the most recent firearms-related surge of Out-of-Stock & Prices-thru-the-Roof Silliness I purchased 2 boxes (1000st) of the ".38 Match-GL" Hi-Tek coated bullets from MBC. I am now a fan of store-bought Hi-Tek bullets.

Pre-Silliness, prior to making a purchasing decision, I liked being able to balance the Hi-Tek store-bought prices against cost+effort for me to produce on-hand PC'd bullets on the back patio. Nice to have a choice, y'know? :)

I'm a new caster.
So new in under 2000 bullets cast. My research and using wax lubed bullets from others turned me off to using traditional waxes. Smoke can be excessive and I shot at an indoor range. Noticeable even with state of the art filtration running. As previously mentioned the sticky on my dies added to cleanup also.

I've already coated with hitek and found it rather simple. Got a nice toaster oven for free.

I wouldn't surmise what the average new caster will or won't due in pursuit of their hobby.

+1!!!

Imagine being at an indoor match and they had to STOP the match because even with an excellent ventilation system the smoke my wax lubed bullets belched out was intolerable. I had to re-shoot a stage and came within an inch of being DQ'd.

Shooting without smoke or lead particulates trump the time it takes and it there's not enough coin to make me go buy wax lube again, or for that matter get me to pay the silly prices for TMJ or FMJ ever again... even IF they go back to pre-panic buying prices again.
