Back in June 2014 Ryan Ketcheson (RMR Bullets) was kind enough to create a special 500ct packet of un-lubed 230gr .45cal lead bullets for me.
I used them to test the PC performance against some lubed RMR bullets of the same type that I already had on-hand.
To remove the lube from pre-lubed bullets I would first bake/burn-off as much as I could (most of it) in the toaster oven (I have long resisted the urge to cast my own bullets ... for me its labor-intensity would far exceed my interest in the process, I am sure). I would then submerge them (agitating them periodically) in a Mineral Spirits bath for a day and repeat that operation with a second clean(er) MS bath for another day prior to removing and drying them.
Retrieving fired bullets from my sand/clay backstop I found (as I suspected) that while the PC did an acceptable job of adhering to the cleaned bullets, the coating on the never-been-lubed bullets was noticeably better.
re: Hi-Tek coating
Before the most recent firearms-related surge of Out-of-Stock & Prices-thru-the-Roof Silliness I purchased 2 boxes (1000st) of the ".38 Match-GL" Hi-Tek coated bullets from MBC. I am now a fan of store-bought Hi-Tek bullets.
Pre-Silliness, prior to making a purchasing decision, I liked being able to balance the Hi-Tek store-bought prices against cost+effort for me to produce on-hand PC'd bullets on the back patio. Nice to have a choice, y'know?
