I recently picked up one of the 1984 Miroku made "Browning" 1895s (no tang safety) in 30-40 and I'm waffling on an aperture sight, so looking for experience and advice. The two options as far as I can tell are 1) the Buffalo Arms reproduction Climbin' Lyman, or 2) the Marbles tang sight.
This is kind of obscure, so advice and direction to a more arcane site where it may be less so is also welcome.
Basically, the Lyman is sort of more period correct as it were but requires a drill and tap for the sight. Frankly, I'm wary of drilling the receiver on my otherwise pristine Grail gun and have had such bad experiences with every gunsmith (excepting Jesse Occumpaugh, but don't think he does that) that I'm also loathe to send it out.
I was surprised to have found a Marbles for the 1895. I thought the bolt throw ruled out a tang sight. I understand that it uses the existing tang bolt holes with replacement screws. So if that's true, it's an easy diy.
Any experience with either sight, advice and counsel, or direction to the Winchester 1895 aperture sight discussion forum would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
