First off all gents...I am brand new here so I hope I am posting on the correct thread. My problem is that I have a brand new CMMG MForgery. Got the lower assembled then the upper and put them together and my bolt catch is not engaging enough to lock the bolt to rear on the last round. I have shot M4's extensively in the military and never have I encountered this. I have not even fired the weapon. I run it manually with various new and old mags and the bolt catch seems too stiff to allow the mag to push it up unless I smack the mag hard. I "assume" the spring may be too tight inside the catch? Any suggestions...Thanks!

It can only be one of two things; either your mag is bad and not pushing it up for whatever reason (weak spring, or follower binding?) or more likely, something is causing some friction and limiting the movement of the bolt catch in the lower. With the upper off you should be able to press the bolt catch up and down and it should move freely except for the spring tension.

Most likely just finish build-up making it tight.

Oil the crap out of it & work it by hand about a gazillion times should loosen it up.

Keep flushing it out with WD-40, or other spray lube while you work it in.

Ok...I don't think it's the mags. I have new and old GI mags and Colt factory...all same results. I do think it may be the finish and being so new. It's a simple fix hopefully! I will oil it and work it till I get blisters! That seems so obvious I was over-analyzing it :banghead: Will give that a try...thanks

You may have also mucked up the hole in the bolt stop if it wasn't aligned with the roll pin when you tried to drive it in. If that's the case, you may need to take a drill to the hole to clean it up. I've made that boo-boo before.

Regardless of cause, it sounds like friction is binding your bolt stop. Find it and eliminate it, and you'll have a happy, functioning rifle.

Thanks Mr. Clean...I'm hoping that's not the problem. I did buy the lower pre-assembled from CMMG so it should be good. I will repost once I know for sure....Thanks again!

Are you able to pull the charging handle all the way back and engage the bolt stop by hand? If so, is it hard to do? If it is hard to do, is it because the bolt stop is just hard to move or is it rubbing on the bolt? If all of the above fails, check your recoil spring. You may have inadvertently gotten a rifle length instead of a carbine length.

Yes, I can pull it all the way back. The bolt stop works if I engage it manually or smack the mag enough to make it pop up just a hair more....it's just barely too stiff for the mags to push it up all the way. Again, have not fired it because, on a separate issue, the bolt locks up when a bullet is in the chamber and takes tremendous force to pull it out/extract. Factory CMMG bolt so I just ordered a LMT thinking there is a problem with bolt lugs? Again, separate issue but not good luck for buying pre-assembled factory lowers and uppers from a fairly reputable company. I'm sure that issue has nothing to do with bolt catch.

Look at the bullet when you extract it. Are their rifling marks on the bullet? Bud, that's two issues and you haven't fired a round yet. CMMG is a reputable company, but anyone can let a lemon out. I wouldn't mess with it. I'd call them and get an RMA to send it back for inspection.

As Tony said call them! They will take care of you...Don't mess it up on your part, let them fix it!.
