So I've already got the lower and upper receivers for my AR build but I can't for the life of me decide on a barrel. It's going to be a long range varmint/target AR and I know I want a 18" or 20" barrel. What I can't decide on is what chamber I want. I've narrowed it down to two options. Here's a link to both barrels I'm looking at.

I can't decide if I want a 5.56x45 NATO chamber or the .223 WYDLE chamber. My understanding is that the wydle will be more accurate but I'm not sure if I'll be able to shoot my 5.56 casings through it. The advantage of the wydle is I'll be mainly shooting 40-60 gr bullets and the leede isn't stretched so far out that there will be a huge jump like the NATO chamber. I definitely want a SS barrel but for $40 cheaper I can handle having it black. This has been racking my brain :banghead: and I can't figure it out so I'm asking for your opinions. This is my first AR build.

As far as the rest of the rifle goes I'm pretty sure I know what I want. It will have a Yankee Hill Machine diamond free floated forearm and YHM gas block with the attached front sight, swivel and bayonet lug. The upper receiver is a YHM as well. The lower is Stag Arms with a collapsible stock. It will share my 6x18x40 Nikon buckmasters scope with my savage 12fv. I haven't decided what kind of rear sight I want either. The YHM is too expensive for my taste. I might just buy the standard A2 carry handle to use when the scopes off. The bolt and trigger is DPMS. After I get it complete I will put a better trigger in it but for now the DPMS will work. (it came with my lower parts kit) Also, as far as mags, I'd like a couple 20rd USGI mags and a couple 30rd USGI mags but they're all sold out on midway. Everyone's hoarding because of the potential HI-Capcity mag ban. :fire:

Let me know what you guys think. Thanks.

Take a look at http://www.redxarms.com/ . There isn't much information out there on them yet, but I have one on one of my rifles. It shoots great and looks like a much more expensive barrel. The chamber is very tight for a 5.56 nato. I haven't measured leade yet on mine, but with the accuracy that I'm getting, I don't think its a problem.

Precision shooters make the chamber fit the requirement, and live with loading brass to meet the specs. If accuracy is the priority requirement, the Wylde chamber is first choice.

I don't think that's been followed through much, a YHM Diamond quad rail is tactical, not precision - a simple carbon fiber tube would do, and either way, the sling swivel should be mounted on it, not the barrel. There will be shifts in the Point of Aim and impact using a tight sling attached to the gas block.

Bayonet lug? Only if there's a special reason, and that goes back to precision not being priority. It's just dead weight.

As for mags, a simple search online has found me dozens of suppliers of AR15 mags, the only glitch in the supplies are CProducts alternate caliber mags have dried up. There's plenty of 5.56 out there and nobody seems much concerned about a hicap ban with a teabag Congress. More likely the income tax refunds have dried up local shelf supplies, in this metro people don't have the luxury of blowing disposable income on recreation. Plenty of mags on the shelf - the auto mechanics are jammed fixing Elmer's car, tho.

what i'm trying to replicate is the USMC's SAM-R rifle. at first it was just going to be a clone build with accuracy second but now i've shifted toward accuracy first. the reason for the yhm gas block is it is the same as the samr and it already has the front sight attached. i will probably mount the sling to the forearm. i don't like the way the regular gas blocks look at all and i don't want to mount the front sight in the rail. i'll check out the bcm barrels when i get off work.

Go with the BCM barrel. Very accurate, behaves itself when it gets hot and is very reasonably priced. BTW, everything I've had that was made of steel and came from YHM rusted like nobody's business. If you get one, I'd suggest duracoating it or something.

whoa the white whatever barrel fits the bill but the bill don't fit my pocket book. $410 is way too salty for me. $220 for the ar stoner barrel is about the most i want to spend. thanks for the suggestion though. the upper i got from yhm didn't have a spec of rust on it. i just hope the quad rail and gas block are the same way.
