Ok a friend at work told me about www.model1sales.com that sells complete kits less
the stripped lower reciever. How good are these parts? What tools do I need to put this togather with a lower reciever?

I'm looking at this because I want an AR-15 but don't want to spend $1000+ for somthing
that is going to spend more time in my closet then being shot.

what about www.star15.com? Any good?

Maybe I should just an AK when I get my FOID card(live in IL)

Heres the place to go to get all the information you need on an AR build....... AR15.com .....very knowlegable people and links to where to buy the best parts and kits, you can build a nice AR for around $600.00 or a little less. Striped lowers will run about $90 depending on the maker, the parts kits for the lowers run about $55-$60. Your better off buying a complete upper and building the lower. My son just bought a complete lower with the PG and butt stock for $215 shipped. You can find good uppers for about $350. Check out AR15 .com for a ton more information.

Plus AR15.com has an Equipment Exchange. I just got into ARs and that is where I have now bought both of my uppers. I bought a 20" fluted Bushmaster V-Match upper complete with the bolt, bolt carrier, and charging handle (B/BC/CH) for $450 shipped to my door. Bushmaster wanted $625 before shipping for the same gun. It shoots just under 1" at 100 yards. I just bought another upper from AR15.com Equipment Exchange. This time a 11.5" Bushmaster upper with the 5.5" flash hider complete with B/BC/CH for $325 shipped to my door. Bushmaster wants $535 before shipping on a new one.

I have not found as good a deals on eBay, but they have a ton of uppers over there. I recommend you take a look at AR15.com and be patient, an upper with your name on it will turn up sooner or later. Then you just have to get a lower and you are good to go.

Thanks guys, I didn't know that AR15.com had equiment exchange.
While I'm waiting on my FOID card I'm going to do some more research.

the "cheaper" internals may have not passed QC at FN

few folkes regret buying quality parts the first time

Can't really afford to pay four firgures for something I'm not going to shoot
everyday. And I'm not planning on doing NM.

I want just a standered rifle with 16" barrel. When I get my FOID I am first going to go
to a gun shop and look around. If I find new/used AR-15 in my price range....

Thanks

Forget about the "four figures" thing. There is no reason to pay that kind of money for a post-ban AR15. I can buy good quality AR15s from my local dealer for far less than "four figures".
If you decide to put one together I have some advice. Buy a forged lower receiver. This should cost less than $100 out the door. I have purchased several for around $70 plus the transfer. Second, as Harry Tuttle says, buy a good quality lower receiver parts kit from a reputable company. I use Bushmaster. The difference between a name brand parts kit and one you buy at a gunshow where you have no idea of their origin is maybe $10. Even if it is $20 I would rather have the piece of mind and also have some recourse if something doesn't work. If you buy from a place like Bushmaster you at least have someone to call if it doesn't work out. Lastly, buy a complete upper receiver with the bolt, carrier, and charging handle. As has been mentioned, you can get these used from a number or sources. IMO you need to buy one with a 5.56mm chamber and not one chambered for .223. You need to buy one with a chromed bore and chamber. Again, Bushmaster is the ticket.
When you get done, you will have paid far less than "four figures" and you will have a top quality AR15 that you didn't take short-cuts on. If you are buying a gun, you need to buy a quality gun. In this case, there is no reason not to.
The nice thing about putting a rifle together like this is that you don't have to come up with the full amount of money right now, out of pocket. You can have patience and keep your eyes open. As good deals come up, you can buy the parts. Over a couple months you will have a fine rifle. The other option is to jump right in, buy the cheapest thing you can find and possibly later regret it.

Thanks. I'm thinking of getting a whole kit minus the stripped
lower reciever. Is there a gun shop near Granite City that
sells lower recievers? What tools do I need?

I'm also thinking of getting a SAR-1 or SAR-3 instead or as well.

A bit off topic but which part of the AR-15 is BATFE controlled? In other words which part counts as the rifle - the upper or the lower?

The lower is the serial numbered part. That's why they sell complete parts kits less the lower receiver.

Everything can be shipped right to your front door---except the lower----have to go through a FFL for that.

And to do that, simply go to your friendly neighboorhood gun dealer and ask him if they would be willing to do a transfer for you for a fair price ($15-$25 usually).

Then the FFL dealer will usually give you a SIGNED copy of his license, which you send to your online vendor.. You buy something from the vendor, vendor ships to the FFL with YOUR name on it (having warned the FFL of its arival). Then you go down to the store, fill out the background check form, pay the man and walk out the door.

It actually runs quite smoothly in practice. ;)

So do I fax or mail the signed copy to vendor? Do I have to do this each time I order
from the vendor, or just once?

Usually you have to snail mail it, and once they have it on file you should be good-to-go from then on.

Thanks. Anyone here have a DoubleStar AR-15? I notice they're around or near the same price
as a kit+lower are.

Just today I assembled a Model "1" kit on an Eagle Arms lower.

The parts kit was missing a spring and one detent. Luckily, I had extras from another project. Otherwise I would have been very upset to have to contact Model 1 and get replacements.

The upper seems fine. The parts kit seems fine, maybe a little rough on the takedown pins.

Otherwise not too shabby, though it has not been shot yet.

Lower = $75
Transfer = $20
Kit = $450
Shipping = about $15

Total = $560

Might be a good idea to contact Model 1 sales anyway so they know they are shipping kits with missing parts.
