Okay, so post-sunset, as soon as possible, I want to get an AR-15. No, do not say "Get an AK" or "get a CETME/G3/FAL/AR-180/Mini-14/life/whatever." I figure that I want to build it from parts, and the following are features I want:

Tele stock
16" Chrome-lined barrel
Forward grip, simple ergo cylinder style
red-dot sight

That's it. No match parts. No free-float fluted barrels. No carbon-fiber. The only problem? US$700 or less.

Is there any way to do this with entirely new parts, or will I have to rethink my specs?

I'm imagining RRA lower, but I'm not too sure on that.

You could get the rifle well under $700, but not the optics. Get something basic w/ a flat top rail, then add stuff later as you see fit, or what you think needs upgrading. First accessory should always be ammo and mags. I've made the accessory mistake a few times myself.

The only clink is going to be the Re4d dot . You an do the rifle fro about $500 or so if you shop around and build it your self .

AR Parts gun

I just assembled one and am working on number two.

Price breakdown

RRA Stripped lower, gun shop $130.00
RRA lower parts kit, Adco Firearms $53.99
Fixed Telestock, Eagle firearms(?) $69.00

RRA A3 Upper including BC,B & CH, RRA $425.00
(upper was assembled, because I didn't have headspace gauges)
(I will assemble upper on number two myself)

Grand total $677.99

I know you could lower the price by shopping around and looking for some used parts(which I will do on rifle #2) but I HAD TO HAVE my rifle NOW.:D

My RRA barrel is not chrome but for $30 more, I think, RRA will send you a chrome one.

I would look at other lowers my RRAs were a little more, since according to the dealer RRA has raised the price now that they have the DEA contract(which I think is B.S.)

Putting the lower together was a snap, 23 minutes from pile of parts to Function check.

First red dot I had was a Tasco Propoint from cabelas $100ish and it worked fine. It will get moved to #2 since I have bought an Aimpoint ML2.

Good luck.

Oh, and by the way those things do start to multiply:D

Darkside

Edited because my fingers don't work as fast as my brain.:uhoh:

What I did about optics:

I started with nothing, and learned to use irons.

Later on, I spent $60 on a bushnell trophy sight, which was a lot of fun. I used that until I learned enough to realize it sucked for myself, rather than taking anyone else's word for it. Up until that point, I knew it was cheap, but thought it was dandy.

Then, for my "graduation", I saved up and got a holosight.

All is well in the world :)

BTW, I'd be happy to pass long the cheapie, if you want it.

Is the Oly Arms cast aluminum receiver good, or is it worth it to spend the extra $$$ (thirty to forty dollars US) for a forged reciever?

Also, for Cav Arms furniture (not receiver, I definitely want metal there): 1. Is it good enough to be worth any extra money spent on it? 2. Is there a dealer in it in the Northern Virginia area, and 3. If the answer to the two previous questions is "yes," then what tool company should I dress it up as (Makita, Dewalt, Milwaukee):p

edit: finally, for upper receiver, A2 or A3, if I want to mount a holo/red-dot sight later?

edit again: Is it illegal to, without any other parts of the rifle, possess a 14.5" barrel with threads and a muzzle brake that will raise the length to 16" or above, and to silver-solder on the muzzle brake (permanently attaching), as somebody who does not have a class 3 dealer/manufacturer's license, and then to buy and assemble the rifle?

Let me point you in the right direction vis-a-vis:

Get a Bushmaster Shorty A2.

This is the perfect AR.

It is supremely accurate with iron sights, yet it can be scoped.

It is relatively light. It is very handy.

A quality rifle, a lifetime investment.

Theoretically, but those start at about $975, which is money I will not be able to spare... according to others, a perfectly servicable carbine can be made for two-thirds of that or less.

MagKnightX - i know the MSRP for the bushmasters is that high, but every catalog and gunshow ive seen has them cheaper. I paid 749 for my a3 flattop 16" with chromed barrel, and a extra 25 for the detachable carry handle a2 irons. Aimsurplus has the bushmasters for a good price too, check them out at aimsurplus.com.
Heres a stubby stock A3 for 769.99
http://aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Bushmaster_Superlight_w__Stubby_Stock.html.
Dont get me wrong, building your own is a viable option, and one im going to do for my second ar, but I wanted my first air to be ready right away with no waiting period while I put it together.

Ought the following foregrip work?

G-TRS-08A-L.jpg

It is designed for airsoft use, but the gun is identical to an M16/M4 series in dimension... and it's far cheaper than any other foregrip system I've found.

What about getting a JT Pre-ban EM-4 kit, grinding the bayo lug, silver-soldering a Bushmaster Izzy Brake, and having a gunsmith pin the stock in the most comfortable position before getting the stripped lower, and then purchasing said stripped lower and assembling? Is this legal?

Would spreading the cost out over time make it easier? That's what I did.

Buy a stripped lower and then the parts kits and buttstock and put them together. Physically there's no difference between a pre-ban and post-ban lower, so you don't have to wait. Go ahead and buy some mags while you're at it.

Come The Big Day order an appropriate upper from somewhere.

In my case I'm probably going to take my upper in and have the barrel threaded and the front sight block replaced with one that has a bayonet lug. Dunno if I'll bother with a collapsable stock or not. Good luck!

Check out the Mega lowers

I would like to start building an AR myself, and looked around. There seems to be a lot of good stuff said about the Stinger/Mega lowers, and they're inexpensive as well. The finish is supposedly better than Bushmaster.

There's an ongoing thread over at ar15.com:

http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=21&t=153544

$89 shipped is a heck of a deal if it's quality stuff.
