Chime in with your opinion on what you think is the most "quite" muzzle device [for the shooter]. Not including any suppressors, of course.

And while I'm on the topic,...how much less blast is there when you go from a 16" barrel to something like a 24" barrel?

Thanks!

Kaw Valley. Forward blast Comp.
I like mine.

Ultradyne also makes a very nice one.

The difference in barrel length is significant.
More longer, more better.
Because the pressure will be less with a longer barrel when the bullet exits.

This happens with a forward blast comp as well. The gases have a large opening to escape from as well as having forward velocity.

When the bullet exits the muzzle the gases have a very small opening at first and are escaping perpendicular to the bullet base.
I think the chamber redirecting these gases forward with the bullet helps with the sharp crack at the "uncorking". In addition to having a larger opening to rush through.

There are many knock-offs, too. Be sure they have a chamber and not just drill holes, these should work fine as well.

So,...if my current setup is a 16" barrel with a Smith Vortex,...a 22" barrel with a KAW would be noticeably less blast for the shooter?

As above, the blast diverters do work very well on short barrels. My 10.5" sounds and feels like my 18" with a Midwest Industries Blast Diverter:

Here's a question. What if I put a "fake suppressor" on the end of the barrel that makes the overall length of the 16" barrel to about 23"? Would that be a significant noise reduction when I'm shooting it?

Here's some specs:

Threaded 1/2"x28
7" Long
1 1/4" Diameter
CNC Machined Aluminum Alloy
Adds 6.5" to barrel length
Heat Treated
Black Oxide Finish

Here is another option:
A 4" long Strike Industries barrel extension for a TAVOR, and then a Midwest Industries Blast Diverter.

I saw a review on the KAW Valley, and for 223, the reduction was not much at all.

I’d guess the reviewer had not shot one much. Not to say there is much recoil to be reduced in a 223 anyway, but the KVP linear compensator does reduce recoil. Not as much as a conventional ported brake, but notably.

I'm not really interested in recoil reduction, but sound back to the shooter.

And I'm thinking that the Strike Industries barrel extension and the MI Blast Diverter might be the way to go.

Another vote on the KVP linear comp. I have the 3.25" magnum and it works very well. Of course it's still loud, but the concussion of the blast is sent forward and that makes a big difference. I also bought a Krinkov style muzzle device, it also does a descent job of directing sound forward.

Kaw Valley. I’ve used them on both a 16” and 18”. They were both more quiet to the shooter, but the 18” was a big jump

I have a couple linear comps but never thought that much of them.

Awhile back I wound up throwing together a 300 blk SBR from stuff I had gathering dust. The rifle length tube was too long for the 8.5” barrel and I didn’t want to test stability with my suppressor on so I built an insert that was held in place by 6, 10-32 set screws, 120 deg apart.

There was a gap between it and the barrel, to ensure any load wouldn’t let it contact the barrel. Can’t tell from this photo but there is room back there.

Let’s me test without the can and not blow up bags and such, less blast too.

The red arrows are two of the six set screws that hold the “cup” in place”

Same thing with the can installed.

One of my good shooting partners has a BRT Covert Comp on an 11.5" upper. It does a great job of sending noise down range without side blast. What surprised us is how much it reduces the flash. The BRT is lightweight, not much longer than an A2 birdcage there was less muzzle rise during recoil. Plus, it looks good. At $65, it's a good value.

I like that one, I have to read up and see if these would be legal in ny.

A Bloop Tube would be the quietest option, but it adds a lot of length. They’re nothing more than linear compensators; very long, non-baffled linear compensators.

Varminterror, so the Bloop Tube would basically be the same as the Strike Industries 4" barrel extension. Then if I add a KAW or a MI Blast Converter to the end of that, it would be my best option, I would think.

I think you’d have a much longer barrel and a lot of perceived weight. I think it was an academic answer, not necessarily a description of ideal. Or I could be wrong. My understanding was that bloop tubes were an attempt to control influences at the muzzle and lengthen sight radius.

Bloop tubes or fake suppressors didnt seem to do much for me. Only thing I found that worked was a blast deflection cup (for lack of a better term). The one I had threaded onto the muzzle and was roughly an inch wide hole with a 2 inch length. Seemed to aim the noise down range.
