Hey pallies. So, I finally have an approved Form 1 in hand to work on my retro-tastic AR-15 SBR. It will look, kinda, like a CAR-15 in it's final form. Naturally, it has a carry handle.

I think I'm going to stick with iron sights. However, if one was so inclined to a acquire a lightweight, relatively low power, scope that would fit on a carry handle AR, what would you recommend? Price isn't a huge factor, within reason, but buying quality is a must as I have no patience for crap optics.

Thanks for any recommendations. :)

A chinese copy of the Colt clamp-on I had for my issue M161A1 is about as close as you'll find, unless your as flush as the man in your avatar was in 1965.........cause the original Colts are $pendy!

I have tried a couple of clamp-on scopes on my version of an XM-177E2 that I built but still haven't found the right set-up. There were a number of Colt 3x20 scopes made back in the day (some were made in the U.S. while others were made in Japan), that would be period correct for your CAR-15. Problem I had with them was with that small objective lens didn't let in enough light. Currently I'm going with the iron sights.

Looks just like the one I built after I got out in '88!

Seems to me that's right around the same time I built mine! Bushmaster upper, Olympic Arms lower, Olympic Arms parts kit, Colt BCG and aluminum collapsible buttstock, and Lone Star pistol grip.

I have a cheap copy of a Colt scope (UTG/Leapers) on mine til can find another Colt branded or Hakko made scope. The first scope I had lasted several seasons of shooting matches. If price really is no issue put an ACOG on it, several models are made for carry handle mounting.

I just get another upper. Don't wreck such a sweet iron sighted upper, it's a waste of time and effort. No option is "good". Iron sight uppers are a ton of fun. Save the scopes for flat tops.

I've used a carry handle mount with a snap on cheek riser for many years on an A2. I forget who makes mine, it's aluminum with a bore down the length to allow the use of the iron sights. Leupold makes a similar mount still, for $30 at Brownells. Not the prettiest photo, since I had it wrapped up for coyote season, but you get the picture.

I recently picked up a Bushnell AR 1-4x24mm FFP with which I'm very happy - wanna say it has a street price just under $400. So far, I prefer it over the Nikon Monarch 1-4x and Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x. The only low mag scope I own which I prefer over this Bushnell is a Leupold VX-6, which cost far more than any of the others. Most of the Bushnell AR line is OK, not great, but OK, but the FFP 1-4x is a cut above the rest of the AR line I have used.

I have considered this for a while, but decided to keep my A2 as is , the A2 sights are accurate enough for me and am happier with a scope on my flat top

Trijicon ACOG no doubt about it. You could find an old used on with the A2 carry handle mount for a pretty decent price. That would also be somewhat "correct" to the platform, as it's conceivable that some old CAR-15s were still in use when the ACOG first came out, especially in foreign countries. I would not be at all surprised to find out that someone's special forces used CAR-15s with ACOGs at some point.

But why not just make it a CAR-15 clone? It's easier than ever to build accurate replicas of historical ARs.

I might be inclined to just get a cary handle adapter and an ELCAN or maybe an Aimpoint Comp Pro or the like which would give the "shorty scope" look at squinting distance, and you'd get a decent optic at the same time.
