AR uppers + lowers.

I've got a S&W M&P 15 PC with heavy varmint stainless upper.

What would be a decent tactical upper? And, they just swap out, right? No mods necessary?

Yes you can swap them in seconds. I would go for a 16 inch barrel with a flat top upper so you can put a quality red dot optic on it. Just get an upper with its own bolt and carrier, dont use the same one for two different uppers, they will wear different.

It would be a "Complete Upper with Bolt Carrier/Bolt and charging handle".

Unless you wish to use the BCG and CH from the other unit. I wouldn't.

Like he said make sure it comes with a complete bolt assembly, and if it does not just buy one for it. I have seen some
"complete uppers" that do not include the bolt carrier assembly. Read the fine print.

DPMS sells complete uppers. So does Spike tactical. There are plenty of companies that sell uppers. The main problem right now is finding uppers in stock. Most companies seem to be backordered until who knows when.

maybe 2 months ago. but complete uppers are everywhere in stock. heck, even noveskes are in stock. bcm has plenty of quality ones in stock.

I just checked DPMS and they've got a 8-12 month wait on uppers. But they seem like they've got the best prices.

Also check AR15.com you can probably find a used upper over there and save some funds. Dependding how you define decent DPMS is okay. I have never heard anything too bad about them. A lot people define decent as high end like Noveske. When you are talking ARs the sky is the limit, so really it just depends on what you will be doing with that upper. If you are just looking to have a new range toy that is more managable around the house in case the situation arises that you need it for defens than the DPMS is fine. If you are going to get serious about 3 gun matches and other stuff you may want to get a better suited upper for that.
