Arizona: State lawmaker wants tax credit for concealed carry permit holders

A proposal to give tax credits to those who get a concealed carry permit in Arizona. The lawmaker says it will promote public safety by helping to ease the cost of getting and keeping the permit.

"An Arizona lawmaker has introduced a bill that would give tax breaks to people who get concealed carry permits. House Majority Leader Steve Montenegro, R-District 13, introduced House Bill 2494 and is the sole sponsor. He says the purpose of the bill is to "promote public safety by easing the cost of obtaining and maintaining permits to carry concealed weapons."As introduced, the bill would give a tax credit up to $80 for going through the process of getting the permit."

I live in Arizona, and have a permit. I think this bill's a great idea. But since we have constitutional carry (no permit required to carry, and that includes most residents and visitors over 18 who have clean records, fewer and fewer folks are bothering to get permits. On the other hand our state government needs all of the money it can get.

Taken the circumstances I'd worry that support for the bill wound be hard to find, but I wish the bill's sponsor all the luck he can get. ;)

If AZ has constitutional carry then what's the point of this proposed bill? To get people that no longer need carry permits to pay for carry permits?

I think the point is to get the non ccw crowd who carries to get a ccw. Woohoo a whole $80 credit. This will die on the floor. I'd bet a cheese burger on it.

The “Up to” $80 credit would only be available to new CCW acquirers, not anyone who already has a CCW, not sure about renewals. Taking the class for the permit would/could be a benefit for the when and where a gun can be carried. Then there is also avoiding the background check when buying a gun and being able to carry in places that serve booze as long as it’s not posted and you don’t partake.

i keep mine current because of reciprocity. otherwise, i really don't need a ccw in this state.
