Hello there my name is Jason Brodsky I am the president and founder of the Asheville Yoga And Gun Club.

Our purpose is to introduce beginners of those disciplines to the joys of yoga and marksmanship.

The fundamental of each practice are so similar and I have observed my shooting gets better because of my yoga and my yoga gets better because of my shooting..

Check out our Facebook page! I’d love to know your thoughts on this as a community… In the Asheville area I did a poll and 80% were interested in learning to shoot 50% were learning yoga.

Welcome to the High Road Jason. I've never done yoga but I understand that it builds self control, focus, strength, and breathing control. I could see where these would enhance a person's shooting skills and possibly to an elevated degree. I think it would be really interesting to somehow quantify the shooting skill development of your members, either individually or as a group (somehow).

I can also see the connection, as NorthBorder spoke of, between self-discipline, mental acuity, focus, breathing, and relaxation that yoga could bring to improving one's shooting skill set. Have to let us know how it goes with your beginning students over time.

It would be interesting to compare the impact of Yoga on shooting vs. Zen. What type of Yoga do you teach? I know from personal experience that pranayama does indeed help with marksmanship.

That sounds like a wonderful combination and I hope you do very well at it. Anything that gets more responsible gun owners as well as more fit folks is got to be great.

In addition to the other benefits of yoga already mentioned, yoga can also greatly improve balance and flexibility. For me, one of the yoga's benefits is that it was the antithesis of the fast-paced, multi-tasking business world. In an after work yoga class, I could focus on doing one thing at a time and trying to do it well.

Jason, good luck with your business venture. Asheville is a cool town and hopefully you will find a receptive market there.

Chris

Might even help bring more women into the fold of guns and becoming shooters.......which is always a good thing.
I am surprised, since Asheville is a very blue part of NC, that this is getting a good reception. Good for you!

I've been thinking about trying yoga. I'm on the road for work and have driven roughly around the world about 35 times mile wise. I'm tight and all my joints and muscles hurt from it Both shoulders the worst from rotator cuff surgeries. It's effecting my shooting along with everything else. If it was at a gun club I think I would have already been trying it. Low impact and gaining flexibility I think would help. Only thing I've heard is the "down dog" position is a fart fest. I'd have to be in the back row not to kill someone. Oh, curious. Do the participants wear camo or plaid yoga pants? My attempt at humor isn't a put down. I think you have a good idea if it helps people. Good luck on your venture.

Jason,
I once posted that training methods used in martial arts can be used to improve your shooting and got slammed by several folks that didn’t get it. So I wouldn’t be surprised if you get a few negative comments. I won’t be one of them as I feel that any exercise that helps with breathing, motor control, and calming ones mind helps in so many ways. Be it sports, shooting, martial arts, or even work and school.

So I don’t know about others but I hope you post here on things that we can learn from you. Like others I haven’t tried yoga but want to at some point. And I’d love to learn anything you can share via posts, video etc

Asheville Yoga And Gun Club.

Okay, you got me. Based on what I know about Gun Clubs and Yoga Studios, I would not have foreseen a natural confluence between the two. Congratulations on having seen it - and been able to make a business out of it.

Thank you everybody for your positive support… As of right now this is not a business… My main business is selling real estate… Asheville Holistic Realty if I can ever help anybody… Anyways yes I certainly intend to quantify the benefits in both directions… I notice as I target shoot that stance, breath, poise, single-minded this really helps... I am inspired to meditate… I intend to post videos to our Facebook page and I encourage you all to please visit it and like it… As of right now this is a public service/community that I am intending to grow… Build some bridges… It’s so funny… There are people who are terrified of both ideas! Some people are as scared of yoga as they are of guns!

Great question! Participants wear whatever they want… We are focusing on very very gentle stretches and breathing exercises anyone can do in any environment…as the group grows, We may do some more advanced workshops in both disciplines… Definitely definitely go to gentle yoga class with those shoulders…The best thing to do is just be very straightforward with the instructor, perhaps even call in advance, To let them know what injuries or physical limitations you may have… A good teacher will be able to provide plenty of alternative postures. I’ve always said that yoga is not a cure-all… But it is a cure most!
