I've updated the article on the history of assault rifle ammo on my website, both to add some more historical information and to bring it up to date with the latest developments. It's HERE

Great comparison pic with the Chinese 5.58x42. I gather the Chinese arn't being as secretive about thier new rifle/ammo as the Russions were with thier AK74/5.45x39. International sales maybe? Capitalism's big in China now huh?
Nice to see new service rifles being built with a longer cartridge length in mind than the current class. I hope it starts a trend. It looks to me like a slightly stretched 5.45x39, do you have any case measurements, diameter, bolt head? Any ideas about the bullet contruction? Is it designed to tumble like the 5.45 or fragment like the 5.56?
I know they have an export version of the Type 95 in 5.56x45. What's the story with the oddball 5.58mm designation? If it's an actual bore diameter will it shoot standard .224 bullets? In this article it's designated as both 5.58mm and 5.8mm. http://www.sinodefence.com/army/small_arms/type95rifle.asp
Please enlighten me about why countries adopt non-standard bore rifles in this era of globalised manufacturing. I'm thinking of 5.45mm, FN's 5.7mm, and now the 5.58mm. If they didn't want to adopt NATO's bore size(domestic politics maybe?) why not step up to 6mm with all it's available tooling?
Now that both of our cold war enemies have adopted virtual copies (Russions and China ripping of our technology? Say it ain't so )of our 5.56x45, I say it's time to chamber our weapons in a larger caliber.
The Chinese calibre is 5.8mm, not 5.58mm. Rim/body diameter is 10.5mm, compared with 10.0mm for the 5.45x39, 9.5mm for the 5.56x45, 11.3mm for the 7.62x39 and 6.5mm Grendel, and 10.6/7mm for the 6.8mm Rem.
The standard 5.8mm ball bullet is really an AP, with a long, hardened steel core - designed to go through body armour (it will penetrate 10mm armour plate at 300m). It is not so good at tumbling and doesn't fragment, so soft-target effectiveness isn't as good as the 5.56x45 (when that works as designed...).
The Chinese apparently decided on their own cartridge for reasons of national pride rather than anything else.
just wondering what are the numbers for G36's VS M4's. id figure the M4 and all of its variants far out numbers G36's. though g36's have a majority hold in europe AR designs are made in a great number of countrys under various contracts and licenses
