Attempt at DIY Cheek Pad

I put one of those slip on elastic shotgun shell holders on my inline muzzle loader to hold a couple of quick load tubes. I found that punching a hole in the bottom about an inch from the back end and sliding it over the sling stud does wonders for keeping it from sliding around. That's what make me think of it for your cheekpiece.

I agree that what you did looks much better than some of the gaffer tape monstrosities I've seen taped to M-16's in photos from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Clayne B... Nice cheek piece. How did you make them? What material did you use? I see abs sheet. Is that some kind of plastic?

thanks,
Jack

it was made out of ABS plastic. you can buy it in sheets. cut out, heat up, it moves very easy when hot, put in oven at 400 for a few min. put on your cooking mittens lol and hang it over a pipe like a wet sheet of paper... or the stock its self once it cools its super strong, and you can heat it again if you need to adjust it

ABS thickness

Clayne,

Thanks for the reply on the abs. Are there different thickness's on the abs? Where do you usually buy it?

So, I took the Savage MKII out for some fun this last weekend. I went to our indoor range, so I wouldn't have to freeze outside. So, my longest range was 50ft. I shot from a sitting position, using the table as a rest. I had a few different types of ammo that I wanted to compare to finally see what my rifle likes better. The cheek rest worked nicely, although I'm not sure if it had a huge effect on my shooting. But I think it made it a little bit more comfortable for me, and probably kept my head a bit more still. I'll definitely keep it on my rifle.

For shooting, I had the following ammo with me:

  • Federal Champion 36gr value pack ammo
  • Federal 510 "Match" 40gr ammo
  • CCI Stinger HV 32gr ammo
Obviously, there are many more types of ammo out there to try. But this is all I had with me. I'd love to try some of the nicer ammo brands out there, but I just can't justify spending $12+ on a box of .22LR ammo. I don't compete, so there's no point.

There's one group on my CCI Stinger target which got kinda funky. I think my optics are failing, since I noticed it got pretty blurry and when I move my head side to side I get what's almost like a second picture. Not double-vision. But when I move far enough, it shifts to a different POA. Between that and the blur, it was pretty tough to shoot a good group. After that one, I called it quits. If it matters, the rifle slid from and upright position and fell over onto the floor when I first got it. I'm thinking that fall, small as it was, finally caught up to my cheap Bushnell rimfire scope... at least I have a reason to finally upgrade to a nicer scope.

In any case, here were the results. Any shots with an "X" were my own fault, not the ammo. All groups were 5 rounds, unless otherwise noted on the target.

It's obvious to me that the CCI Stinger ammunition performed significantly better in my Savage MKII. Maybe next time I'll get something different to compare results.
