Help AzCDL fight discrimination against
firearm manufacturers and retailers!
Companies in the firearms industry have long-faced difficulties and sometimes outright discrimination in the normal conduct of their businesses. Banks, credit card processing companies and others that have political agendas sometimes throw up unreasonable barriers to manufacturers, retailers and others in the industry conducting routine activities like loan applications, payment processing, etc.
While not strictly illegal, such behavior has caught the attention of lawmakers. They want to prohibit the state of Arizona from entering into lucrative contracts with institutions that discriminate against the firearms industry. Last year, a bill to make that prohibition into law was vetoed by the governor, so this year they are bringing it to the voters by putting a referendum on an upcoming ballot.
The ballot measure would allow the state to enter into contracts for goods or services worth over $100,000 only with companies that provide written assurances that they do not, and will not for the duration of the contract, discriminate against companies in the firearms industry or related trade associations. This restriction would not apply to sole-source contracts or when no bids are received from companies willing to sign such a statement.
Ballot resolutions such as SCR 1007 do not create law and do not require the governor's signature. Instead, if the measure passes out of both houses of the legislature, it will appear on the ballot for voters to approve or reject. Once approved by voters, even future legislatures cannot gut the measure.
SCR 1007 will be heard next Wednesday morning, March 6, by the House Judiciary Committee. The committee members need to hear your YES vote in RTS in order to get this measure on the ballot.
