The other day we went to the new Cabelas super store, and I picked up one them pistol gripped butt stocks from ATI. Went out and tried it today. Used a various mix of loads; Winchester 000 buck, Remington 000 buck and Wolf 00 buck. Also tried out the PMC rifled slug load. I noticed a great difference and improvement using the ATI pistol grip butt stock. The shotgun was very controllable, and I was able to really plant it into my shoulder. The PMC slugs were ok. Out of this gun, the Winchester rifled slugs shoot the best. Surprisingly, the Wolf buckshot, was pretty good out to 40', longest home defense distance. The real winner in patterning was the Winchester 000 buck. This gave the tightest most centered pattern at 40'. Today was basically a step back in time day. The pistols and AR stayed home, and it was nothing but the shotgun a Ruger GP-100. Both still have their place.

Glad it worked out for you, Rob. Buck and slugs perform so differently in different shotguns that zeroing to a brand and lot is mandatory.

What make shotgun?

Revolvers and shotguns, simple yet effective. I am still debating if I want to keep the bead sight, add a ghost ring set up or get a cylinder bore barrel with rifled sights.

A couple things that should influence your decision about the sighting system....

Beads work well, especially in close range, SHORT time frame crises.

Open and peep sights come into their own for slugs, and work well with a variety of loads.

Inside use, keep the bead. if this is your goto for Community Defense or WIHTF, add adjustables of your choice.

Thanks Dave. I never took them scenarios into consideration. My shotgun is primarily for HD work. If the social order ever went south, thats what I have my AR for. I actually do very well with the front bead. At 25yds I even get very good slug groupings. I will start working on that out to say 50 yds. Beyond that is what I consider AR work. For HD and CQB type street fighting I still think the shotgun, in its simplest form is a viable tool.

You're very welcome, Rob.

Inside 25 yards, the shotgun is the most effective weapon there is. Once outside that, the rifle comes to the fore..
