Two people were killed by a grizzly bear in the Arctic Widlife Refuge area in Alaska. They found an unused gun and found and killed the bear.

Support your right to arm bears!

Sorry, I don't mean to make light of a serious situation. This sort of thing is bad news all around; I have to wonder how this could've been avoided.

We're supposed to be smarter than the bears, so presumably it was carelessness on the part of the people.

According to what I read, the people did everything right in the sense that they had their food stored properly, along with everything else. The authorities were saying that it appeared to be a case of the bear literally hunting them as a food item. They were attacked in their tent (IOW they were probably asleep) and likely didn't have a chance to brandish the gun before it was too late.

These animals can move so fast and are so powerfull that even if you do everything right chances are on the side of the bear. Especially in tight cover and while sleeping at night. Don't ever get lulled into believing that you are safe because you have a gun in grizz country.

Bear attack stats will show us otherwise.

Unfortunate

I feel very sorry for these folks and treir families. Especially since they seemed to have taken all the usual precautions and tried to stay safe. Contrast this with the Treadwell case where the guy was an idiot and faced the inevitable. Regretable about the girlfriend in that case, too.
Also, in their element, I'm not so sure we are smarter than the average bear. Or deer. Or elk, you get the idea.
