A camera is just not a good self defense weapon up against a big, hungry bear. Now I know that vegan environmentalists tell us to embrace nature, but isn't it a good idea to have a gun with you while you are out there doing all that tree hugging?

"A self-taught bear expert who once called Alaska's brown bears harmless was one of two people fatally mauled in a bear attack in the Katmai National Park and Preserve.

The bodies of Timothy Treadwell, 46, and Amie Huguenard, 37, both of Malibu, Calif., were found Monday when a pilot arrived who was supposed to pick them up and take them to Kodiak, state troopers said Tuesday.

Treadwell, co-author of "Among Grizzlies: Living With Wild Bears in Alaska," spent more than a dozen summers living alone with and videotaping Katmai bears. Information on Huguenard was not immediately available. "

And this guy you can read about at

"It's likely that by living with these Grizzlies, Mr. Treadwell is attempting something no human has ever done before. Sure, past indigenous people lived in the open wild, but they were always armed. The only defense Treadwell has is his wits. He had a can of bear mace, but no longer carries it. "

While this environmentalist was a vegetarian, the bear that ate him and the gal with him wasn't.

and this Russian one:

"BEAR TORE A MAN TO PIECES IN KAMCHATKA

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, December 29. /RIA NOVOSTI CORRESPONDENT OKSANA GUSEVA/ -- RIA Novosti was told in the Kamchtka search-rescue detachment that a bear tore a man to pieces in the Kronotsky wildlife refuge.

One of the oldest workers of the Kronotsky wildlife refuge and well-known Kamchatka photographer and hunting specialist Vitaly Nikolayenko fell victim to a big bear 1.5 kilometres from the station on the territory of the wildlife refuge.

Nikolayenko was taking a photograph of the beast and failed to use the weapon he was carrying when the bear attacked him.

The rescue workers brought the body to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

A total of about 600 Kamchatka bears live on the territory of the Kronotsky wildlife refuge but cases of attacks on man by beasts of prey are extremely rare."

This topic is very old. Why did you feel the need to rehash this? Especially with those 'links'?

Sorry, but I just don't see the point.

One too many animal shows for the kids over the holidays with the theme of "people bad, animals good".

Just had to vent!:D

Besides, the Russian case just happened.

I'm sorry, but all the links required me to register so I didn't know what to think about the Russian one.

At any rate, yea you're right. But when people are so stupid, you can't do anything about it.

Can we find that bear??

Now that the bear in the first story has developed a taste for idiots, in fact may consider them a delicacy, can we find him and haul him to Malibu? He might solve a lot of California's problems.

Just a thought. Don't give me a lot of jazz about the logistics of the job.

'Course maybe the bear will come down with "mad human disease."

Thany you, publius

That was a great article.

And the timing of this thread you started is pretty great too. Right in the middle of it we have TV footage of that Aussie idiot trying to tempt a crocodile with his month old baby.

And the Aussie is mentioned in the article. Tell about exact timing!

The fool and the croc makes what jacko did seem like,.....well,....nothing.

I've been held by the heels out open windows when I was a kid and thought it was great. 'Course I was a bit older than jacko's kid.

That fool with the croc is actually the only thing that's kept me awake a night in recent memory.

So. What does this have to do with guns? The line in the article something about "..let the magnums do the singing..." or whatever is gun related. But the big gun relevance is that this shows what idiocy can do. It is idiocy that anti-gunners try to promote and tap into in their "fear gun owners" activities. It is idiocy that gets the Discovery Channel and others to promote the bear bums and their idiotic utterances as if they were the finders and founders of some new, world-saving philosophy.

Anti-gunners and bear bums and croc creeps are cut from the exact same bolt of material. You can't tell one from the other.

The other night on The Learning Channel I watched some goof whack a pretty large black bear on the nose with a newspaper. I`m assuming since they were both in a pen that they had a relationship. The bear proceeded to kick is azz all over the place.:what:
Sort of reminds me of a certain Las Vegas entertainer who thought he had a "relationship" with a large Puddy Tat. Kinda like me and a ham sandwich.:neener: :D

OK, it's time to play...

Name that relevance! <insert cheezy theme music>

The line in the article something about "..let the magnums do the singing..." or whatever is gun related. But the big gun relevance is that this shows what idiocy can do.

The line that wasn't in the article was also gun related. Instead of, "Honey, hit this bear with the frying pan!" The line should have been, "Honey, blast this bear with the 45-70 guide gun!"

Also, Mr. Treadwell expressed a perhaps legitimate fear that he was in danger from poachers. Another outstanding reason to have a rifle. The article I posted was relevant to this forum, I thought, because it shows the consequences of willfully being defenseless.

Every animal finds it's station on the food chain. Humans are amongst the few species that can truly determine their relative ranking. Choice is good! Choose wisely.:D

the bear is dead?:what:

we need to clone that bear and unleash it upon those hippies.

just think we could be there with guns ready to sell at 100% markup and charge lessons fee and dont forget ammo. I am sure some of them will want ear protection because the shots are louder than on tv.

I *have* to ask...

...since the one guy was a vegetarian, does that make him "organic" food for the bears?

I guess its good that the bear got a low-cholesterol meal...

Regarding Mr. Tuttle's link, I'm not sure that opening sentence is accurate. Being eaten is one way Treadwell probably predicted his own death, but he also did say he felt he was in more danger from poachers.

Anyway, it's interesting to learn that he was in the habit of inventing and reinventing his past and his persona, and spent his time protecting one particular population of bears that are not even endangered. If DiCaprio and the other celebs can't find anyone or any cause more deserving of a 25 grand donation, they really aren't looking very hard. Probably just looking very hard for attention.

Protecting wildlife from extinction and playing games with wild animals for fame and donations/money are totally different items.

Even thousands of years "domesticated" animals get out of hand as you can read nearly every day in our news-rags.

Going into the wilderness armed is a very good idea, especially if you happen to meet zwo-legged predators (remember the Yellowstone murders?).
