Friend called and told me a nice Remington 700 was for sale, timney trigger, shilen barrel, headspaced, lugs lapped in 6.5-284 Norma. Got a Leupold scope and its bedded I assume. Got the action length to take advantage of the COL and they say shoots bug holes. I'm usually a Savage guy cause I can do about anything with them but I gotta admit its got my interest. I know the owner and he never has junk and is a bug like me on accuracy so I'm starting to think I should take a look. If I get I'll post some pics.

What do you want to use it for? Deer hunting? I really like my 284win but haven't tried it on game yet. I personally would stick to the larger 7mm for more versatility on bigger game. But if it's cheap and has some life left to it I might just buy it anyway hah.

First things first, great avatar and welcome to THR! On the rifle, I stand at a disadvantage in being unfamiliar with your geography, despite Mr. Robi’s class lessons back when. What I picture in my mind are reasonably close shots and honestly, when I picture a hunting rifle for deer it seldom wears a custom barrel.

Another thing that misses my list is COL, not for disbelieving it aids accuracy, but rather because I need the rifle to function in the field with the utmost reliability. That is of course a factor related to my climate and won’t necessarily echo your needs but bears mentioning as I once stuck a round and my 700 took a rather smart whack to the brazed bolt handle to extract it. My fault for not catching the label information on my own loads meant for a different rifle.

Now if this purchase is meant for the bench I suppose my mind is asking if the stock will need replacing, will it be dialed for multiple distances often enough to trip up that Leupold, and of course is at the bench where I want to be? Adding in the price of upgrading either of the two major components above could have you wishing away a white elephant no matter how accurate.

Food for thought, may not apply to your particular conditions, wish you the best on the decision either way.

Well thank you all for the thoughts and opinions many I'm sure are born from experience. That said I've given it a fair amount of thought and now know that health matters have brought about sale and its been together for quite a few years so rounds down the barrel would be a real factor. He shoots a lot or at least used to so with load work, hunting, and just plain enjoying it barrel life is probably on the short side I'd guess. That brings me back to why I'm a Savage man, barrel change is not a simple 20-30 minute job and I don't have access to inexpensive take-offs or ready to go customs. I don't need another hunting rifle my pair has me covered on what I do in Maine be it bear, moose, or deer. The guns I use do sport custom barrels and they been many a mile thru bogs and alders with no harm however. I actually want a 284 but was willing to consider the 6.5 in its stead as a complete gun, killer is I have a complete gun built that lacks a barrel and I put a spare 22-250 barrel on it. Why I don't know cause I have a 22-250 already, dumb huh? $300. buys me a ready to go shilen or criterion while $185 will get me a new savage varmint profile one, just got to wait for a caliber I want to try. The customs offer 284 of course and Its showtime right away. I believe the opinions expressed are things I didn't want to think about but that's why you ask others they often confirm whats true. COL is something I always consider cause finding that low harmonics point in a barrels movement as the bullet exits is a real group tightener and has worked on every load I've ever tuned. I finish with I should finish what I have now and let experience rule the day, I'm going to pass on the Remington, believe me I'm not down on them I just know what I'm doing on the simple old savages.....thanks again woods
