I purchased a Browning .270 awhile back and have not been able to find much info on when this gun was made. The serial number is L134* and there are numerous stamps and symbols on the opposite side of the receiver. The gun came with a 4X Redfield (separated by an upside down reversed L) Tube scope. I took this gun to the range last week and it shoots great. I understand there was some problems with salt treated wood on some of these rifles but I can't find any signs of rust anywhere on this one). I believe it may be a Safari but I'm really not positive. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Great guns. The larger calibers were made with Mauser actions and the smaller calibers were Sakos. The early Mausers came with "long claw" extractors, later they changed to push feed Mauser hybrids. The salt years were from 1966-1971. My guess is yours is a 1964 but Browning changed the coding several times....look in the back area of Blue Book of Gun Values....it will be listed there. I owned a 270, 264, 22-250, and 30-06. All were smooth and accurate. Enjoy it....you can't wear it out.

Thanks for the info. I replaced the 4X scope today with a Nikon Monarch and was very pleased with the way it shot. I loaded up 3 different loads using H4831SC and Hornady 140gr SST's and found that 56grs gave me a 1" group at 100 yds (55 & 57 weren't bad either). The only problem I had was the front sight. It sticks up so far I can see it when the scope is cranked down to 2.5 power. It must be soldered on as I can see any pins or screws holding it on the end of the barrel. Once I crank the scope up the sight is no longer a problem. I think it is going to make a dandy deer gun. Thanks again for the info.
