I bought a Benelli Nova last Christmas, and it came from the factory with three chokes: Improved Cylinder, Modified, and Full.

About three months ago I went to screw the Modified choke in for the first time, and it wouldn't go past about a half a turn (the other two chokes go in like butter). It appeared as though the choke was improperly threaded from the factory, so I called Benelli customer service. The lady was really nice and said they'd send me another one.

Well it's been three months and still no choke. Is it time to call back? Is this typical? What should I do if they "claim" to have sent it out a long time ago?

Also, I've only put 75 rounds through the gun when I went to go shoot 5-stand with my friend. Did pretty well, as it was my first time shooting a shotgun. I had the Improved Cylinder choke in when I went last time, and we are going again today. Since I only have the Improved Cylinder and Full at the moment, which would be better for shooting 5-stand?

What scenarios are the three different chokes typically used for? Which would you use for duck hunting?

This site has been so helpful with many different questions! Thanks ahead of time!

In my opinion, the IC choke is the best all around choice of the bunch. I use it 98% of the time for 5-stand & sporting clays, so you should be all set. On rare occasions I'll sometimes use a Lt. mod. As for Benelli, you should have called back long before now.

Hmmm sounds similar to the problem I had. My modified choke wouldn't even go into the barrel far enough to engage the threads. But instead of calling Benelli (I have a Nova too) I pitched it and went and bought a Briley choke for like 20 bucks. Beats waiting around.

Here's what I use:
IC for dove
Modified works great for ducks over decoys.
IC or Modified for pheasant
Improved Modified for geese
Super Turkey (XXFull) for turkey

I haven't used the factory full choke for anything yet as you can't shoot steel shot through it. Only time I use non-steel is for turkey and I have a turkey specfic choke for that task.

This is why I won’t purchase a Benelli product. I know second hand via my father inlaw how terrible their service is and how they are very resilient to stand behind their products.

Seems like a silly reason not to purchase a Benelli. Keep in mind that the Nova is pretty much Benelli's low end, basic shotgun - same class as an 870 Express. I can't image they check every choke with every gun.

Besides, I would bet that even $20 aftermarket chokes are better built than the ones that get thrown in the box with the gun.

I would absolutely buy another Benelli. My son might end up with my Nova and I'll go for the SBEII :)

Update

Just called Benelli, and explained to them the situation.

They told me that they still have me in the computer, and that the part is on backorder... Man people must be buying Benelli's like crazy if it takes more than 3 months just to get a choke.

I asked her if she knew any approximate time frame as to how long it would take. She replied that it had to come from overseas, and that there was no way of knowing.

Guess I'll just go buy an after market choke.

Any recommendations?

They shouldn't need to.
Nobody else does that either.

I can't imagine a non-standard thread got put on a choke tube by a CNC machine, and got overlooked by thier QC inspection station!

That right there is the hard thing to believe!
