I'm fairly new to guns, but i've been doing some research. I'm looking for a good beginner gun, not too expensive (under $400) but also powerful and reliable. I'm also looking for one with at least a 4 shell capacity. Seems like Benelli or Mossberg would be good choices, any other brands should I be looking at?

Also I would prefer a tactical shotgun (synthetic materials preferred), unless that wouldn't be a good idea

If that's what you're looking for you can pick up a Benelli Nova Pump for around $200. The only reason I recommend this (I'm assuming you want it for home defense) is because I own one and it's done right by me since I picked it up. . . . brand new from a friend for $75 :D

I own both a Benelli SuperNova Tactical and a Mossberg 590. Below are the positives/negatives regarding each:

Benelli SNT: PRO's: Exceptional quality/durability (probably the best Ive personally seen given the price), great features; CON's: Limited aftermarket parts availability, parts are more expensive than other makes/models, initial mag capacity is lacking thus requiring a mag tube extension for greater versatility.

Mossberg 590: PRO's: Good quality, good aftermarket parts availability, great features, tough; CON's: Sometimes may require mag tube spring change, fit/finish not quite as nice when compared to the likes of Benelli, parts/aftermarket availability not quite up to those offered for the Remington 870.

All other makes, Im just not sure of. The Remington 870 has a strong following, but IMHO, the usual 870 Express models just dont match up to the previously mentioned Benelli and Mossberg models, when considering more than the 870's aftermarket parts availability.

Now, keep in mind, the Benelli SNT or Mossberg 590 may put you above the $400 mark new. So, I guess the alternatives would be the Benelli Nova or the Mossberg 500 (advantage=better parts availability vs. the 590). Both are good guns, but not quite the same vs. the SNT or the 590. But, if all else fails, I guess try out the 870 Express and see what you think.

Personally, as I mentioned before, I think the Benelli trumps them all in terms of overall quality. But, the cost of replacement parts (particularly barrels) and the lack of aftermarket support might be unacceptable to you. Also, in terms of the Benelli, keep in mind that the Nova's stock is fixed, whereas the SuperNova Tactical stock is interchangeable.

If you can, I would sport just a bit more cash and go with either the Mossberg 590 Special Purpose ($450 give or take) or the Benelli SuperNova Tactical ($480). These models are a bit more "robust" vs. the others. The Benelli is "cool" and modern; the Mossberg is "mean" and all business.

Happy hunting!!

well... time for more research.

If by "research," you mean actually taking the time to go out and handle each of these shotguns...good idea. Don't allow our opinions to finalize your decision. But rather, use the opinions as "food for thought" while seeing firsthand which model fits/suits you best.

As a word of encouragement, whether you go with Benelli, Mossberg or Remington...you will end up with a fine shotgun. So dont fret...Just decide which one works for you and go with it. Enjoy the hunt!

Mossberg... In fact for a beginner just buy a Mossberg Maverick 88. Heck, Im no shotgun beginner and I love the Maverick and have a few.

Great shotguns and we've put thousands f rounds through them without fail.

$187 at my local WalMart.

Well, I just made my decision... I'll check Walmart and Academy to compare prices for the Mossberg Maverick. Thanks, AllAmerican. Everyone can feel free to continue posting if you like.

Good tip !

"Mossberg..... Buy one for $200+, spend the rest on ammo and practice... practice and then practice some more"

Best advice so far....... Im going with the BSNT !

How did that Maverick turn out?

I own an 88 and its pretty good. Though i've only put a baker's dozen of shells through it... It has a decent but pad but could benefit from a nicer one of softer rubber.

but also powerful

remember, power is entirely dictated by the ammo selection and the gun as basically zero impact on this. (unless you get into extremly different types of guns firing the same ammo like a 4 inch revolver in 357 magnum vs a levergun with an 18 inch barrel)

Benelli. Super easy to keep clean, saftey and release are in just the right spot. Plus if you are crazy, you can shoot 3 1/2 inch shells. You said you wanted powerful. :D

Get a Mossberg 500 12 ga Persuader 20" barrel 7+1 shot. Cheap, looks good, got all kinds of after market stuff and will last forever. I have one that I take to the range to allow the young troops to shoot. It has never been cleaned, other than just wiped down and a patch thru the bore. I would guess it has 2 to 3,000 rounds thru it and has never failed for any reason. I lie, it will not chamber the little 1 1/2" mini shells every time.
