Thinking about a new Beretta gas gun in 20 ga. Slightly used will work as well. Which series do you that have experience with them prefer? This will be a second clays gun for me. I get 23-25 per round already with a 12 ga O/U Beretta. I want to try something a little more challenging. Not interested in other brands. Please only comment on these two series please.

I have not seen the A400 series out on the clay field, so can't really comment on them. I had a 391 for a short while, really liked the gun and got it for a great deal slightly used. But I still tended to shoot Remington 1100/11-87 better. When someone offered me about $200 more for it than I payed for it, I sold it. I do regret not keeping it, because I could shoot it well, but at the time a bit of extra cash was needed. I know several shooters that run the 391 guns and love them for the very smooth action and light recoil.

I have never held/shotan A400 in 20 gauge, but I do own a 20 gauge 391 with a 30" bbl that I use for sub gauge sporting clays and some skeet. Its a neat little gun, but light! Even with the Graco weight kit (forend and in buttstock) which adds almost a pound, it still does not shoot as softly as a similarly set up 12 gauge 391. Other than that, a very nice gun. Would I buy the 391 over an A-400? Yep. Over the years the quality and handling characteristics of the Beretta gas guns has devolved.

This, and I’d take a 390/3901 over a 391.

391s are discontinued; whether or not that merits consideration is only something you can decide. Personally, if it only for clays, I would get the 12 gauge that weighs about 7#...

I got the 12 ga covered as discussed in my original post. You can find the 391 around here slightly used pretty often. My intention is to drop in ga size a little for more difficulty. Maybe even go 28 ga. I know Beretta makes an A400 in 28 ga but not in the 390/391 series. My question was asking a comparison of the two model series.

The A400 is easier to clean, IMO. The A400 28 is VERY light; I had to add my mag cap weights from my 12 to a friend's 28 in order to swing it smoothly. One thing you can do for more of a challenge is use a Full choke for every target presentation.

A300 Outlander 12GA owner here. Never shot one in 20GA, but I imagine it's quite comfortable as the 12GA feels about like a 20GA pump. Break in the action with a couple of boxes of heavier loads before you go with light loads. All the Beretta gas guns need a little breaking in, including the A400s in my experience.
