I recently bought a preowned 12 gauge Beretta O/U 686 Silver Pigeon 1, with SPORTING stamped into the barrel. However, the factory label on the hard case reads ber 696 sporting. I can’t imagine the factory would have a typo on its own label.

Has anyone seen something similar?

I'm guessing it's a typo on the case, make sure the case's serial number matches the gun's serial number, you may have a collector if you keep them together.

Inadvertently finding a collector = good
Can’t shoot it cuz it’s a collector = not good

Shoot it anyway, I can't imagine even if it made it a bit more collectable that it would bump the price up more than a few percent. That gun was meant to be out busting clays or birds in the woods and brush. Plus it is already pre-owned/used.

Kudu,

Without hesitation, it will be used. I didn’t wait all this time for a great deal just to look at it taking up space in the safe.....

My 686 White Onyx is also a sporting model. My son owns the 686 SPI. The only difference between my sporting model and my son's SPI is the sporting model does not have the automatic reset of the safety. It makes the sporting model a lot easier to use on the trap field by not having to reset the safety every time you open the gun to reload. You can take a link out of the safety of the SP1 to make it that way too. That's the only difference I know about.
