Good Evening.

I'm in Texas where Open Carry will be legal in 2 days. I actually won't be carrying open except in very rare situations but in workshop discussions and with others "retention" has become a big discussion. The best soothsayers seem to believe that for OC the holster will need to be a retention holster but exactly what that means is not well defined. In any case, I have been rethinking my carry holster. I have several but the one I like the best is just on open top, friction tight holster that the belt slides through loops. I have a couple of Paddle holsters but that seems to be a question if that will qualify as a "belt" "retention" holster. In just a little informal experimentation, the paddle holster would actually not be that hard for someone who knew how to do it to grab it off my belt - not a good thing.

So, the bottom line is I need a new, preferably leather, preferably tan/brown, holster for my Glock 23 that the belt slides through loops and that has some kind of positive retention mechanism. I have a Bianchi paddle holster with a top strap that I really like except now I am concerned about it being grabbed off of my belt - I know that's unlikely if it is concealed but can't be too careful.

All advice greatly appreciated,
Bill

Well, the stuff is getting ready to hit the proverbial fan but..............

There is a very inexpensive super retentive holster out there. It is so good, some instructors have banned from their classroom. And there is a notable video of a "gun guy" shooting himself in the leg because of it.
Becausssssse..................they didn't practice. I never wear any holster that has an "anti-grab" device. If I did, I would not wear it for real until I practiced with it every day for a month. That is exactly why I removed the device on my Serpa Level II holster. At 74 and carrying for 40 years and competing over half of that, I was taught to place my finger by the trigger guard. I ain't changin'. Nuff' said.

Beware that there are guys out there that practice on bought or stolen holsters how to disarm an officer or a civie.

Black Hills Leather (Texas maker) has a bunch of thumb break models https://blackhillsleather.com/gun-leather-holster/thumb-break.html

For what it's worth, I wouldn't open carry even if I were allowed to. I also wouldn't carry with a thumb break holster unless required to by my employer or typically wore a holster while riding ATV's or dirt bikes.

High Noon offers some thumb break holsters. They have a comment in their FAQ section on thumb breaks at...

Safariland makes some of the better retention holsters http://www.safariland.com/holsters/duty-holsters/

I have a level V Safariland holster that if you don't know what to do and the sequence it must be done in, one would be more likely to take your pants, belt, holster and gun before they will get the pistol out.
