Most can agree that 9x19 is adequate if not ideal for self defense. Giving that, which pistol in your opinion is the best compromise in size, weight, capacity and so forth. I prefer hammer fired handguns and I'm leaning towards a Sig p-224. What do you think?

Compromise for what?

For pocket carry I think the Rohrbaugh R9 is a good compromise.

If I could OC, I'd say the P7M8 is a good compromise.

Kinda open to interpretation....I have two favorites for CCW in 9mm. For under a T-shirt, a Shield is my EDC in a Crossbreed SuperTuck. If I have a cover garment, the Glock 26 is the weapon of choice. I shoot the 26 very well, very quickly - it just fits for me. It also rides in a CB ST.

The r9 is the one of the smallest 9mm and great for pocket carry. I'm looking for a do all if it exists. Good carryability ,accuracy of a full size and decent capacity.

In my own experience for belt carry anything G19-sized is, in my opinion, the best compromise in terms of grip length and weight while still being able to achieve a full firing grip, sight radius and maintain significant magazine capacity.

If you're trying to pocket carry, it's hard to beat a J-frame.

9x19 is always a compromise.
I'd always rather have a .45.

However, life is full of compromises.
I can't always carry a .45.
Hell, I can't even always carry a 9,

For belt carry, I really like the Ruger SR9.
I'm thinking about getting an SR9C for CC, but I really want an S&W 3906 or 3913 for that.
For pocket carry, a J frame .38 is king.
I often carry a Kel-Tec P3AT as a backup to my S&W 36.
If I have to carry a compromise gun, I prefer to carry two of them.

jimbo555, you've been here a while now. You should know that there is never a BEST of anything, it will always depend on each individual, his/her circumstances, training plus any number of additional variables.

Best for you and your home, health, training, income, environment, whatever, doesn't mean the same for anyone else.

Choose something, invest in training, practice, keep aware of your surroundings and repeat.

It's striker fired, but the SR9c is a very nice concealed carry gun. You can carry with the 10-round mag inserted for compactness, and carry a 17-round mag in your pocket for a reload if you need it after the first 10. I wouldn't feel undergunned and it's easily defense-accurate enough to do the job.

For a gun the size of a P224, and to fill your desire for a hammer fired gun, I'd have to recommend the Walther P99 compact "AS" It's striker fired, but is a DA/SA striker fire gun. Chamber a round, and press the decock button on the top of the slide and you're in double action mode. As you pull the trigger, the striker acts as a hammer...really clever design. Only problem is 9mm P99Cs are hard to come by, but the .40 is a soft shooter, love mine.

Great gun I also like a hammer . I am less a fan of the 9mm but in all reality it is just fine . I like the 45 ACP & friends like the 40's A full size is best for me but Size and weight are less a factor in my carry method . A Sig is a great gun wish I had one in my collection.
You thinking is right on > a quality gun Now give some thought to the carry / holster . I like a shoulder holster myself with a Kimber pro carry 45 ACP .

The Sigs are great guns. I've owned a P226 for years an have never had a malfunction. As another striker fired suggestion, take a look at the Glock 27. The recoil is surprisingly soft for a .40, at least compared to other .40's I own. It's small and light enough that it's easy to carry, but is big enough that it's easy to shoot. Extended magazines give you extra capacity if you want. There are good 9mm self defense rounds, and I often carry a 9, but when possible my preference is a .40 or .45.

There is almost no quantifiable difference in effectiveness between 9mm, .40S&W, and .45ACP using modern ammo in real world situations.

Just sayin'.

That said, the P224 looks like a nice handgun, so if that's what you want and feel you need, go for it.

Thanks all for the replies. I'm currently considering the sig 224, cz rami, walther 99c and 3rd generation s&w. The problem is getting hands on them.

Another choice

My concealed carry is the Colt defender. I can wear it year round. It's got you hammer action and Hornady+P Crtitical duty, I think it can stand up to most .45.It's all metal with 1911 platform and with 8+1 good capacity. I took off the oversized Hougue grips and replaced with vz grips. Now I wear IWB and/or belt holster and it's super accurate for it's intended range

It's striker fired, but the Ruger LC9 suits me better than any of the other small 9mm pistols I have shot.

If my back was what it once was, and if I could OC/OWB, the P7M13 I once owned would be my choice.
Since neither of those is the case, the Kahr PM9 in my pocket is the best compromise.
For me.
YMMV.

Frankly. I like your choice of the SIG P224, as a carry gun for size , weight, and capacity. It weighs 25 oz, is subcompact in size, and holds 12 rounds and will also take the P229 mags if needed. As an OWB/ IWB carry option it makes sense to me. It comes in 9mm, 357 SIG, and 40 cal. You get the power but less recoil in a subcompact . Plus it is a SIG . GOOD CHOICE... snoop

For me it's the Ruger LCP regardless of the .380 haters. It fits, conceals, and with the pinky mag extension it hits where I point it so I mostly ignore the crappy sights. It is what it is and it's a fist fight range pistol.

I did not like the trigger on the 9mm LC9 but am awaiting feedback on the LC9S with an advertised shorter pull. It's on my "maybe" list since I would really like to carry a single stack 9.

.

Some folks are having issues with the p224 but I know that's true of every handgun. I'm going to give it a try. It looks to be about the same size as my beretta 84bb.

SIG SP2022, highly underrated IMHO. The SP2022 is DA/SA w/a great trigger, but if you prefer DAO the SIG P250 (Gen2) has an exceptional trigger, best trigger pull this side of a tuned revolver. I've owned both and would be happy w/either but EDC a P250 Compact 9mm.

Like Kokapelli mentioned, the LC9s is striker fired, but the original LC9 is hammer-fired. I have one of those, and I think it's an outstanding CC. Very thin and concealable, holds 7+1. The trigger pull does take getting used to, especially if you shoot other, striker-fired pistols; but like anything else, practice creates muscle memory.

Thanks Bangswitch and Tomac. I have a ruger lc9 and like it fine, I'm looking for double digit capacity. The sig 2022 looks good and I had one in my hands at the lgs. It is a bit large, but I might consider it because of reliability issues with the smaller 9's. I just might stick with my Beretta 84bb. It is 100% reliable. Just have to find the most effective 380 round for it. But that's another story.

Thanks all for the replies. I'm currently considering the sig 224, cz rami, walther 99c and 3rd generation s&w (3913TSW). The problem is getting hands on them.

All great choices right there, and I'd add the H&K P2000SK with a LEM trigger variant into the mix. I'd start with the H&K & add the rest one by one to the collection!
