Best Hunting Package Under a Grand?

Well for a heirloom gun I would want some really nice wood. The best figure and grade I could afford. This is because there is just so much wood and I have several "old beaters" like Iver single shots that actually have beautiful grain(I would almost say figure), but this is becoming more rare as the years go by. But that would be a shame to beat up hunting. So go with the looks or feel you are most comfortable with, then the important thin is to teach the grandson responsibility and love of firearms and anything can be the treasured memory of what "Grandpa and I used"

Just my opinion.

This is my ideal - Winchester classic compact M70 in .308, Talley rings, Leupold 2-7x32 compact scope, brownell latigo sling. Should be able to tackle anything smaller than a brownie.

30.06 is a great caliber. The model 70 would be ok. Scopes are like pick up trucks........everyone has their favorite.

M-70

I love my Winchester Model 70 in 30-06. Blued with black composite stock. It's technically called the "Black Shadow", but my father-in-law named it "the licorice stick" when he first saw it, and the name stuck.

Deer, bear, coyotes...the last sound they ever heard was the licorice stick going bang. It's one gun I will truly never trade -- ever.

Sako

Yeah, I thought that a little odd. I posted my question on the 3rd, and then the other guy posts his two days later. Same question.

Thanks for all the input, fellas.

I'm going to take a look at the Sakos.

I'd still like to know how different the current Winchester 70s are from the pre-64 models. Anybody?
